Home to Heather Creek Series

October 22, 2008 by Melissa

Sweet September (Home to Heather Creek, Book 2) is the second book in a new Guidepost series called Home to Heather Creek. I gave a mini-review of the book here.

I’ve since had the opportunity to read both Sweet Septemberand the first book in the series, Before the Dawn.

I enjoy reading series because I like to get to know the characters beyond just one book. They become friends, and I don’t like to leave them. Still, I don’t think I’ve ever read a series written by different authors, and I was a little wary of doing so because I wasn’t convinced the characters would be consistent. However, Carolyn Aarsen and Tricia Goyer pulled it off.

Aarsen first brings us into the lives of Charlotte Stevenson and her teenage grandchildren, Sam, Emily & Christopher. The children come to live with Charlotte and her husband Bob after their mother dies in an automobile accident. Charlotte hardly knows her grandchildren, who are not thrilled to leave California behind for a Nebraska farm. Charlotte, afraid of getting it wrong (her daughter, Denise, had run away from home at 18), spends the spring feeling her way through raising three practical strangers.

Goyer’s book picks up the story in September, as the harvest is just beginning. Although Charlotte, Bob and the children are starting to feel more comfortable together, they still have a lot to learn about being a family. Generational struggles, a mystery, and grief play out in this story that will warm your heart and make you appreciate your family.

While the books are part of a series, they stand alone well. I have a copy of Sweet September to give away. If you’d like to win, leave a comment. We’ll announce the winners on October 29.

Melissa has been captivated by books for as long as she can remember. She resides in Virginia and at Breath of Life

I also love to read a series. It really gives you a chance to know the characters and watch them grow. I’ve never read a series between different authors. Interesting.

I enjoy a series because of the characters too! The first ones I read that were by different authors are Tales from the Grace Chapel Inn, they might be done by Guideposts too…sisters that run a bed and breakfast, they’re pretty good!
