Kendal Carter has gone by many different names throughout her life, but she’s always kept the same initials–KC. But her days as a top spy are behind her. Now her life is consumed by being the best mum to 4-year-old Rosie that she can be. That includes living in out-of-the-way small European towns. Kendal hasn’t really let her guard down though, and part of her isn’t surprised when she’s flushed out and ends up back in London at her old agency Bon Temps, trying to figure out who’s trying to find her.
Her ex-handler Rico is thrilled to have her back. He puts her up in a high-end safe house near good schools, and gives her a new assignment–tracking down a dad at Rosie’s new school, who’s involved in a shady tech company, all the while passing as a “normal Mum.” She even has an almost-roommate, Joel, a Canadian all around nice guy who worms his way into Rosie’s affections while Kendal trains him. But all is not as it seems. When old flames flare up, old stories come to life, and the brave new world of play dates and coffee mornings bring its own complications, Kendal will have to rely on everything she learned in her days as a spy to simply survive.
I, Spy is a fun read. Light-hearted and warm-spirited without ever being sentimental, it’s a perfect beach or airplane read. Plus it ends on enough of a cliffhanger that I’m hoping for a sequel!
