Who’s Looking at You? {Review and Giveaway}

September 22, 2012 by Carrie

Do you know why I really like Who’s Looking at You? and Tushes & Tails!, two new “Nature Lift-the-Flap” books by Stephanie Frattini? Well, I will tell you! I like them because unlike other lift-the-flap books, the photographs actually present a challenge for the reader!

In Who’s Looking at You? the reader is to guess what type of animal he or she is looking at based on a close-up of the animal’s eyeball. And some of these things are quite tricky. Since Frattini really gets up close and personal, you pretty much have only the eye and a tiny bit of skin or feathers surrounding it. We guessed wrong on more than one occasion – which I thought was awesome because that meant it wasn’t just your run-of-the-mill peek-a-boo type of book. (I know I probably should have guessed the horse correctly but I did not.)

The same can be said of Tushes & Tails! In case it is not obvious what we are looking at here, it would be the backside of the animals. These was one occasion where we guessed incorrectly and I had such a hard time belieing we could have missed it, I wondered if I had received a defective book! (Alas, the defect was not with the book . . .) That just goes to show how cleverly these photographs are featured. (I’m going to insist on Frattini’s cleverness here, ok?) We really loved looking through these books and wondering exactly what type of animal that we were looking at!

The photographs in this book are bold and vibrant. Crystal clear (except for informing you instantly what animal you are looking at), I am very impressed with the quality of the work. On the last page spread of these sturdy board books you can check out all of the eyes or rumps of the animals again with small lift-the-flap windows. Over all these books are excellently done and we enjoyed them.

Now comes the good news! Sterling Children’s Books have offered to give  a set of these books away to one of you! Would you like to win? Simply leave a comment below. This contest is open to U.S. Residents only.
We’ll announce the winner in our Wednesday giveaway column on October 3.

Thank you, Sterling Children’s Books, for shooting a copy of these two books over for me and my children to then check out and offer our opinions on. We like them very well.

  • The winner of Flash Kids giveaway is #2 – Anne
