Baroness, with Giveaway

May 5, 2012 by Lauren

In Heiress, the first book in the Daughters of Fortune series, author Susan May Warren explored the lives of two sisters in the Gilded Age of New York City. Time has passed, and Baroness, the second book in the series picks up with Esme and Jinx and their teenage daughters. Lilly and Rosie are struggling with the mistakes and heartache that have spilled over from their mothers’ lives, while also navigating their own futures in the Roaring Twenties. Surrounded by flappers, the new thrill of aviation, prohibition laws, and the mafia, Lilly and Rosie are torn between the expectations placed upon them by their families and their own dreams.

Like Heiress, Baroness is an epic story. Lilly, raised in Montana, but now living with the expectations that come as the daughter of a newspaper magnate, wants nothing more than to return to her Montana roots where she can be free of the constraints of society in New York. Rosie’s fiance is chosen by her well-intentioned mother, but she wants nothing more than to be an actress. As both young women step out in search of their dreams, they are faced with the harsh realities of life, and both fall victim to those who want to use them for selfish gain.

Baroness is an exciting glimpse into a flashy, but troubling time in history, and Susan May Warren creates complex and intriguing stories for both heroines. Although Rosie and Lilly may live in the 1920’s, they are typical teenagers who feel their parents are keeping them from experiencing all that the world has to offer. Unfortunately, like many before and after them, Rosie and Lilly realize that the challenges of the world are much tougher and more heartbreaking than they could have expected. Both girls must decide whether to return to the support and love of their families, and it’s not an easy path to navigate. And while these issues come to a head in the final pages, Susan May Warren leaves the door open for more adventure in book three of the Daughters of Fortune series!
