I have been reading books by bestselling author Susan May Warren for years. One of my favorite series, which I reviewed for 5 Minutes for Books, is her Josey series: Chill Out, Josey!, Everything’s Coming Up Josey, and Get Cozy, Josey!. This series is lighthearted and funny, and I highly recommend it. In her new series, Susan May Warren explores a completely different genre and time period, including much darker characters and plotlines. While completely different from some of her past novels, Heiress is Susan May Warren at her finest, and I can’t wait to read the next three books in the Daughters of Fortune series.
Set in New York during the opulent Gilded Age, Heiress tells the stories of two sisters. Esme and and Jinx, the wealthy daughters of a newspaper magnate, are coming of age and planning their futures. Esme, the elder sister, is a beautiful debutante facing the possibility of marriage to a man she doesn’t love. Rather than live a life of pleasure and wealth, Esme wants to follow in her father’s journalistic footsteps. Jinx, Esme’s younger sister, can’t believe her sister would consider throwing away the life of high society. She dreams of parties with the Astors and Vanderbilts, without thinking about the heartache that comes with a loveless marriage. With dramatic twists and turns, the sisters take different paths, but both face periods of happiness and despair in the years that follow.
Heiress is an epic story. The scenes in New York provide a glimpse of both high society and the abhorrent living conditions of the working class. Other scenes in Montana depict the wild, untamed lifestyle of the west. For much of the novel, the sisters’ stories are told separately, but in the end, their lives reconnect in a dramatic finale. Susan May Warren’s fabulous storytelling kept me turning the pages, and left me ready to read Baroness, the next title in the series.
I enjoyed Heiress immensely, and I am excited that we have three (3) copies to giveaway to our readers. If you would like to win a copy of this book, please leave a comment on this post. We’ll announce the winners on October 5.
