Wide Open

March 14, 2012 by Nancy

Hallie Michaels has returned home to South Dakota on unplanned leave from a tour in Afghanistan in order to bury her sister Dell. The police have stated that Dell committed suicide, but Hallie doesn’t believe that’s possible, and she has 10 days to find out what really happened. Hallie receives help from her friends, Deputy Boyd Davies, and her sister’s ghost, who is always near but never speaks. As Hallie digs deeper into the mystery surrounding Uku-Weber, the company where Dell worked before she died, more ghosts appear, and the more Hallie is convinced something sinister is going on.

Wide Open is set on the South Dakota prairie and the open land provides the perfect backdrop for a mystery combined with an element of fantasy. The weather is unpredictable out in the wide open and when it appears someone is controlling it, causing lightning strikes and other freak occurrences, it’s all the more chilling.

Hallie is tough on the outside, starting bar fights and refusing to back down from her enemies, and her initial fear of the ghosts gives way to acceptance and a need to find out who killed them. Hallie does and says what she feels is right and deals with the consequences later. Hallie is flawed but she’s the kind of heroine one roots for all the way.

Wide Open is the first in a series, however the book stands alone and I didn’t even realize there would be more to Hallie’s story until I read some other reviews.

The publisher is providing a copy of Wide Open to one winner, U.S. only. Leave a comment to enter the giveaway and the winner will be announced on March 28. This giveaway is closed.
