Ally Green has spent most of her life traveling the world as a flight attendant. When her father passes away, Ally must return to face her past and Vesey Washington, the man who was once her best friend. As Ally returns to her South Carolina home, she revisits the racial tensions from her childhood and the feelings for Vesey that have never left her mind completely.
On the other side of the world, a young woman named Sunila escapes a life of slavery in Nepal in search of answers. Although she comes from the lowest caste, she finds a friend at the American Embassy who is willing to explore events from years ago. As Sunila and Ally struggle to deal with their pasts and how to move forward in separate worlds, neither of them realize that they will find some of the answers together.
Beyond Molasses Creek shares the stories of Ally, Vesey, and Sunila. Author Nicole Seitz explores each of their lives as she shares their narratives in first person, alternating between each of the characters. Themes such as racial intolerance, social class differences, forgiveness, redemption and love are examined through a touching story about two women searching for love and peace. Beyond Molasses Creek touches on life in the southern United States, traditions in the eastern parts of the world (that are foreign to many of us), and relationships, both with other people and with God. It is a touching story that shows how our pasts are always with us, and while they often include pain, they bring great blessings and lessons as well.
I recommend Nicole Sietz’s Beyond Molasses Creek, and I am happy to say that we have two giveaway copies for our readers. Please leave a comment on this post if you would like to win.
