Ann Patchett is known for her well developed characters and plots that unravel at a pace that keeps you reading late into the night. State of Wonder is her first novel in 4 years and it’s worth the wait.
Dr. Marina Singh is a pharmacologist working on a drug to control cholesterol. Her officemate Anders has been sent to the Amazon to track down a doctor who has not been in contact with the drug company in years. Dr. Swenson has discovered a tribe of indigenous people whose women bear children well into old age and she’s been attempting to create a drug that can be marketed in the first world. When Dr. Swenson sends word of Anders’ death due to a fever, his wife asks Marina to find out what really happened.
Marina is involved with the president of the company, though no one else knows of their relationship and she can’t even bring herself to call him by his first name, even in private. The anti-malaria drug she must take before her trip brings back a recurring dream she had as a child when she would visit her father in India. Originally an obstetrical student of Dr. Swenson’s, the memory of a botched c-section that blinded the child continues to haunt her.
In the Amazon Marina finds adventure, cannibals, and perhaps most importantly, how to deal with her past. State of Wonder is another book of wonder from the very talented Ann Patchett.
