This week’s Booking Through Thursday asks:
Are there any particular worlds in books where you’d like to live?
Or where you certainly would NOT want to live?
What about authors? If you were a character, who would you trust to write your life?
When I was reading through the questions, I was thinking, “What fictional world would I want to live in?” My mind immediately went to fantastical settings, because I get enough real life here in my real life.
But then I read the last question: “Who would I trust to write my life?”
Immediately I thought of Jan Karon. I would choose to live in the small-town of Mitford. Yes, I would trust her to write my life, and I would love to live in a world where people are kind, quirky, and where there’s hope for second chances. I’d love knowing that I might run into Father Tim who would surely give me a cheerful “hello,” and Barnabas might give me a big thump of a wag. And I would finally be able to taste one of Esther’s Orange Marmalade cakes, because it’s the kind of thing that someone in that kind of town would do to welcome a newcomer, right?
It’s a small town, which I don’t think would be my first preference for a fantasy world in which to reside, but they have a bookstore and a bakery. What more would I need?
What about you? Where would you want to live or not live? Check out other worlds where people would like to live in the comments section of Other Worlds.

I answered this question on my blog. Most of the places I’d like to live are out of this world so to speak.

Your answer is similar to mine. I’d like some of Esther’s cake now.

I’ve seen the town of Mitford mentioned in a couple of responses so I’ll clearly have to dig out the book and read about it.

I would live in any world Nicholas Sparks writes about. When I read him I feel like I am right there along with the characters, cheering them along and crying with them.
Or I would live in the Baxter Family series in Bloomington, Indiana by Karen Kingsbury. It makes me giddy thinking about it.

I am lovin’ the present times. Nothing like it!
Here is my BTT post

I am fascinated by Jane Austen’s world, but would prefer to be a visitor rather than a permanent resident. Perhaps Laura Ingalls Wilder? A much simpler time, which is exactly what my soul longs for these days.

I went ahead and played too.

Jan Karon is a really good pick. I like that!

I’ve never read any of the Mitford books, but you make it sound like an absolutely lovely place to live!

I keep reading books that take place in like the 1800’s and I think that would be kind of neat. In Phillip Pullman’s Dark Materials trilogy, you can jump through worlds and that would also be pretty cool.
A world I wouldn’t want to live in? any post apocalyptic, or dis-Utopian world obviously…
Hmmm and for who can write my life? Janet Evanvoich and Stephenie Meyer both seem to have my number – I think I could trust them to do me justice. 🙂
Diana Raabe says
No, no, no…wouldn’t trust anyone with that story!

the Shire! good times with lots of food and drink. those hobbits know how to party.
Julie says
Yes, Mitford would be a wonderful place to live. I’d find myself down on the farm a lot. 🙂 Great post.

The only person I would want to write my story would be Jane Austen. And, that’s the only book world I would want to live in too, I think!

I too have dreamed of living in Mitford. In fact, when I look around for places to raise our famliy I always look for characteristics similar to Mitford. It’s exactly the kind of place I want to my kids to know and love.

I love that Jan’s books keep coming up. I found a small pile of them at the thrift store a few months ago and they are sitting on the shelf. After your comments I am completely itching to read them. Why does there have to be so many books worth reading? And also why am I always so easily distracted away from reading in general?
