Books on Screen: Sesame Street

August 7, 2008 by Jennifer

Amanda really enjoyed Sesame Street when she was a tyke. I remember when my dad and I were counting up her spoken words when he visited one time (I think she was about 18 months old), and almost every Sesame Street character was in her list. Kyle was never as interested, but here lately (he just turned four), I can sometimes convince him to watch. This season’s focus is on math literacy, and since he loves numbers (in addition to books), perhaps that would catch his interest?

I’m stretching the category a bit here, but since Sesame Street is all about early literacy, I thought I’d pass on some information I received about the new (39th!) season of Sesame Street.

One thing that I like as a parent (although I think it’s probably unnecessary for the children) is how they try to combine parents’ and children’s interests to create a television viewing experience that the whole family can enjoy together. For example, check out the guest stars who will appear in the first couple months of the new season:

  • Jack Black (8.11)
  • Feist (8.11)
  • Neil Patrick Harris (8.12)
  • Heidi Klum (8.14)
  • Jenny Mcarthy (8.15)
  • Will Arnett (8.18)
  • Jason Taylor (8.20)
  • David Beckham (8.22)
  • LL Cool J (9.22)
  • Chandra Wilson (9.30)

They also continue to draw from popular culture with some all-new features “Are you smarter than an egg layer?” “Preschool Musical,” and “30 Rocks.”

One thing that I do know that Kyle will love is the brand new website complete with games, video, and activites.

Do you and/or your kids love Sesame Street?

My daughter is 20 months old and she absolutely adores Sesame Street…Elmo is her favorite!

I remember watching it when I was a child, and I still enjoy watching it with her every morning after breakfast. We also have a collection of the Sesame DVDs. It’s truly a great program!

We’re excited about the new season!

My kids have never watched SS much, but my daughter loves the website. We just noticed yesterday that it has been redone.

We went through a big SS phase with my oldest, but, I think, because she has moved on to other favorite shows, I don’t think to let the 2 year old watch it. They DO love the website, so I will need to make sure and show them the new one. 🙂

My son loves Elmo (Momo). He is now 18 months old and Momo was one of his very first words. We watch it together, and I agree, it really ties in some funny stuff for parents. I like to go to You Tube and watch old classic Sesame Street clips. Here is a great one! It will make you smile:)

I loved it as a child and wish it was more like those episodes. I have to admit that the new ones annoy me a bit,…especially that elmo and his world 😉 My kids actually seem to like Nogging cartoons more right now.

My 20 mo loves Melmo! Though he’s not a big TV kid, like my 5 yo is. He’ll watch 5-10 minutes of a show and he’s done. I find the SS skits to be too long, even I find myself wishing they’d move on already!
