The Uncommon Woman: Making an Ordinary Life Extraordinary

April 23, 2009 by Melissa

There’s a direct correlation between how much highlighting I do in a book and the impact it will have on me. I can tell you after reading The Uncommon Woman: Making an Ordinary Life Extraordinary from Moody Publishers my life will never be the same.

There are so many things I love about this book, I can’t possibly list them all. But I’ll share a few of the gems I discovered.

Author Susie Larson has divided the book into three sections (four chapters each). The Uncommon Woman:

Understands the Paradox that She is Nothing and Everything centers around an issue I imagine is common to most women, self-worth (too much or too little). How do we realize that we are nothing without Christ, yet everything with Him?

The more we understand that our identity in Christ is continually secure and that no misstep, rejection, or judgment could ever change that, the more liberated we become from the opinions of others. As the gap increases between God’s opinions and others’ opinions, we are able to live more freely…(p. 24)

After settling the issue of her value in Christ, the Uncommon Woman is able to value others and

Embrace a Different Perspective. How do we see and love people as Jesus did? How do we recognize the truth about others, as well as ourselves?

…the world doesn’t get to determine our worth. Furthermore, we have no business summing up another’s worth based on our worldly perception of her. (p. 81)

Once she committed to see herself and others through the eyes of Jesus, the Uncommon Woman can then begin to

Change Her World. How do we overcome our fear of following God’s leading, believe His promises, and stay under His protection?

…when you keep Jesus on the throne of your life every-single-day, and when you determine to be done with attitudes and activities that are beneath you, you will be positioned to march into your next place of promise.(p. 160)

Each chapter ends with a set of questions to further your study and assist with life application, making The Uncommon Woman: Making an Ordinary Life Extraordinary an invaluable resource that I’m sure I’ll use for many years to come.

Melissa is a very common woman, who longs to be uncommon. She resides in Virginia and at her blog, Breath of Life.
