B is for Books

April 8, 2009 by Lauren

A few weeks ago, I found a box of books on my doorstep. Because I review for 5 Minutes for Books, this is not an uncommon occurrence. As far as my kids are concerned, however, this was the best book delivery ever!

PhotobucketMy son immediately grabbed B Is for Baseball: Running the Bases from A to Z and read it from cover to cover. He loved it! After looking at it, I can see why. Although my seven-year-old son is generally past alphabet books, this is one version of the ABC’s that even my husband would enjoy. The book is filled with pictures from baseball history, including famous players, teams, and ballparks. There are also many pictures of baseball memorabilia from the Baseball Hall of Fame incorporated into the text. As we are now in April, and baseball season is in full swing, be sure check out this book. It is sure to be a hit!

PhotobucketWith my son happy, I now needed something to please my daughter. After peeking into the box, she was not disappointed! She found Posey Plans a Party. When she saw the pink cover, she immediately reached for it and asked me to read it to her. Posey’s tale of pink and purple party planning is perfectly precious! (And yes, there are a lot of “p” words in the story.) This story is one of my daughter’s current favorites, and it is sure to please the pink-loving princess crowd!

PhotobucketAs an added bonus, our book box included a story that made both of my children smile. Greetings from Kiwi and Pear is an adorable book about two globe-trotting monkeys. They travel to every continent snapping photographs of famous animals and landmarks. The book comes with a map and a set of stickers so that kids can mark each destination. I thought this was a great way to open up a discussion about geography on a very basic level, and it appealed to both my 4-year-old and 7-year-old.

I highly recommend these crowd pleasers, and I am happy to say that we have a copy of Greetings from Kiwi and Pear to give to one of you (U.S. shipping addresses only). If you’d like to win, simply leave a comment at the end of this post. The contest will close on April 14, and we’ll announce the winner on April 15.

The winner of last week’s Mother’s Day gift book from Standard publishing is #59 Chrysa.

I hope I win the book! Our last name is too long and so we frequently shorten it to Kiwi. In addition to that, I call my son, Monkey Boy. He’s sure to love a book about a monkey named Kiwi!
