If I Were a . . .

February 11, 2009 by Carrie

Tiger Tales has published a series of “If I Were . . . ” books by Pat Hegarty for both boys and girls that spark the imagination and delight the fingers. These are textile learning books which children can explore while dreaming about what they want to be when they grow up.

The illustrations are done by Liz and Kate Pope and are very childlike in their appeal. I like the drawings as they look very much as if a child could have drawn them, but definitely did not. The people almost look like glorified stick figures but the details in the drawings are impressive. In short, I thought the drawings compliment the stories of the books quite well because children are to be thinking about what things would look like as they imagine it to be.

Although not every little girl is going to grow up to be a princess (the statistics are low) that doesn’t stop girls from dreaming about it! If I Were a Princess lets the young girl dream away and is quite cute. Another title available for girls is If I were a Ballerina which might be a slightly more attainable goal. Nevertheless, both books are quite well done and both dreams quite real!

For boys you might check out If I Were a Firefighter or If I Were a Soccer Star.

Again, I think these books really help a child to develop their imagination as they afforded the opportunity to explore with their hands as well as with their eyes. These are charming little board books and we (my two year old and I) would encourage you to look them up!

The publisher has graciously agreed to give away one set of each of the four titles mentioned above to one of our readers. If you would like to win a set of these books, leave a comment. We’ll post the winner on 2/18.

The winners of last week’s giveaways are
Heart in the Right Place: #64 Lucy K.

Angels in the ER: #14 Helen S.

Love the idea behind these. I have a Dora book like this – but with the tactile part and my two year loves it. Of course, I think he has a crush on Dora he is always carrying ’round a Dora book and asking me to read it or pretending to do so himself.
