Angels in the ER

February 4, 2009 by Carrie

Contrary to what you might think from the title, Angels in the ER: Inspiring True Stories from an Emergency Room Doctor has very little, if anything, to do with supernatural beings floating through the Emergency Room in this South Carolina hospital. Instead the author, Dr. Robert Lesslie, is referencing the human beings (doctors and nurses and everyday people) as having risen to challenging situations and occasions to act mercifully towards their suffering fellow man.

If you enjoy watching medical dramas on television, then you will absolutely love Angels in the ER. Published by Harvest House, this book does have scriptures at the beginning and ending of chapters and Dr. Lesslie is obviously a Christian. However, that doesn’t really creep into the story at all and could be easily overlooked if you prefer your medical dramas to have a more neutral feel. This book reminded me personally of the old “reality TV” show, Rescue 9-1-1 hosted by William Shatner. I used to watch that show all the time with my mom and brother.

I thought Dr. Lesslie did an excellent job telling stories of some of his experiences in the ER room. I can’t say that I typically seek out medical books these days, but this one was thoroughly enjoyable. His stories are tied together well in a manner that keeps you on edge wondering what the outcome of various patient situations are going to be. He also ties in moral conclusions to some of his stories, primarily when it comes to the dangers of drinking and driving.

Again, if you like medical documentaries, dramas or thrillers – this book will be right up your alley. As the back cover states:

“In these true stories – some thoughtful, some delightful, some heart-pumping – you’ll see close-up the joys and struggles of people like you.”

The publisher of this book, Harvest House, has graciously agreed to give away one copy of Angels in the ER to one of our readers (U.S. Residents only please). If you would like to win a copy, leave a comment below. We’ll announce the winner on February 11.

The winner of Where the Heart Leads is #102 Miss Heidi.
