Nick McCoy has a great reputation as an art restorer and conservationist, popular with his colleagues and in demand by art museums. However, he is also a talented art forger, and his version of works by famous artists hang in several galleries world-wide. A multi-organizational international task force is on his tail, tracking his every moment. Originally from London, he’s currently living in San Diego and working for Dixon Steele, an unlovable multi-millionaire who only loves his paintings and is otherwise an entitled, inconsiderate lout. Steele trusts McCoy implicitly but doesn’t realize that McCoy is working his own ends, teaming up with Steele’s third wife for revenge against the ruthless man who destroyed both of their families of origin.
In an effort to wrestle with his own demons, Nick sought therapy a few years back from Dr Kate O’Dade, and he’s happy when he sees her again at a gallery opening. He’s had a crush on her for years. Dr Kate has her own issues. Someone sent her a gorgeous Matisse and she doesn’t know who, or the painting’s provenance. Is it a copy or a forgery? Her involvement of Nick will plunge the two of them into a maelstrom of unforeseen consequences.
Artist, Lover, Forger, Thief takes the reader into the world of high-end art acquisitions and accusations. We follow not only Nick and Kate’s story but also the international team chasing them, and sometimes we’re not sure who we want to win. Although the writing is bumpy at times, the plot is gripping, tightly-wound and well-paced. Recommended.
