Julie Walker wasn’t at all prepared for what the well-dressed woman across from her is saying, and at first she refuses to believe it. Julie is normal, average. She’s mom to 3 teenagers, works in the Ottawa library, and she’s close to her mom, especially after her dad died some time ago. Now this stranger is telling her they’re half-sisters, that her dad had another family. Worst of all, Julie and her mother and brother were the other family. At first Julie refuses to believe it, until her mother confirms the story.
The new sister, Frances, seems happy to meet Julie and her mother, but she warns them against her brother. Apparently her father’s first wife came from a New Jersey family heavily involved in racketeering and other organized crime. The main reason for the bigamy in the first place was that the wife’s first family wouldn’t allow their sister to be “disrespected” by divorce. Frances warns them that they may be in danger, but Julie doesn’t take her that seriously, until things start to escalate.
Who is doing it? Where can they be safe? Would someone really kill innocent people just because he doesn’t think they have the right to resist? And worst of all, who can Julie really trust?
That Other Family is a twisty, gripping story of how one generation’s decisions are visited upon another’s. The plot points are tight and keep you riveted to the page, but the plot is mercifully free of characters making really stupid decisions or things getting too gory. You’ll want to stay up to finish it, but you’ll be able to sleep afterwards! Recommended.
