Mercy in the Mist: Circle of Nine

November 11, 2025 by Elizabeth 2 Comments

As a book reviewer, I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher or author to facilitate this review. I received no other compensation, and all opinions are always 100% my own.

At the end of Sacred Treasures (linked to my review), it seemed all was well with the world. 15 year old Brigit Quinn had teamed up with two other Tuatha teens to vanquish a demon into Otherworldly darkness, along with his wicked coven. But something is wrong. Brigit is haunted by terrible nightmares, so vivid that upon waking up she can accurately draw the faces of those screaming out to her in despair. On top of that, her father is receiving threats due to her grandfather’s role in the matter. Who is threatening them? And can anything be done about these dreams?

Now the Irish police are asking questions, and the threats against Brigit’s family are growing worse. The Circle of Nine (of which Brigit’s mother Celeste is one) seems to think that these are just bad dreams, but Brigit knows she needs to do the unthinkable–go back into the Otherworld and plead for the tormented souls. Once again, she teams up with other teens from the magical Tuatha de Danann for an even riskier attempt.

Mercy in the Mist is the fourth Circle of Nine book (see my reviews for books one, two, and three) and continues the story told in books one and three. (The second book is a collection of novellas telling the stories of three of Brigit’s ancestors). Brigit is a many ways a typical teen, figuring out boys and friendships and parents and when skipping school is justified. I’ve enjoyed her character arc throughout the series, as she learns that her choices reflect the person she is becoming. The books can be read alone but are best read in sequence, as each builds on the previous one. Recommended for those who enjoy magic realism and coming-of-age stories.

Author Bio:

Valerie Biel writes award-winning books for middle grade to adult audiences–stories inspired by her travels and her insatiable curiosity. Her young adult fantasy series, Circle of Nine, was inspired by the myth and magic of Ireland’s ancient stone circles. She’s also the author of HAVEN, a contemporary middle grade novel, and BEYOND THE CEMETERY GATE, a mystery suspense story. She’s a founding member of the Blackbird Writers & a member of Sisters in Crime & the Wisconsin Writers Association. When she’s away from the computer, she’s likely wrangling her overgrown garden, reading multiple books per week, or traveling the world–often on trips for the The World Orphan Fund charity she and her husband run. She calls a (tiny) portion of her family’s century-old Wisconsin farm home, but regularly dreams of finding a cozy cottage on the Irish coast where she can write and write.
