Dot has yet another new job–her 3rd in 3 years! She’s heard the rumors around town, calling her the “Camden Curse” because of the murders that have happened to her work acquaintances, none of which are her fault (see previous books in series here and here). Now she’s working at the town mortuary, a family business run by the gentle Oliver and his exacting mother Neva, with his teenage son Henry as additional help.
The first dead body is that of a young woman who was swimming at the lake and run over by a speed boat. The mystery is which boat and who was driving it? As Dot begins to investigate, all too soon there’s another body found dead at the lake.
Dot’s engaged to Ben now, but she’s reluctant to set a wedding date. She wonders if she really is cursed, and if marrying him will be the same as signing his death warrant. Meanwhile she and Ben, a local journalist, do all they can to track down the killers. This means spending time with an obnoxious pair of boys, helping the town’s only policewoman–who is also Latina–fight misogyny in the office, sleuthing around the local marina, and more. But when Dot puts herself in danger’s way to get answers, only her wits and a reversal of the curse can save her!
I Can’t Get No Satisfaction is a fun read. Dot is sympathetic and smart, and the revolving cast of characters believable. Author Teresa Trent does a good job of recreating time and place, a small Texan town in the 60s when hemlines and hair-dos were climbing. Recommended.
