The newest in the American Museum of Natural History’s collection, ABC Universe is an oversized board book that will introduce older toddlers and preschoolers to the wonders of the cosmos. Sturdy like a traditional board book, but sized at 10″x 10″, it essentially is a hybrid in format between a board book and picture book.
Twenty-six terms relating to the universe are introduced and paired with eye-popping photographs, from Astronaut all the way to Zenith. Sure, many of these concepts are beyond most young children’s typical repertoire, but simple explanations are provided for the complex terms and exposure to these concepts just may spark an interest that will expand as a child grows older.
Though I can’t often say that I’ve learned something after reading a board book with a child, this one provided a different experience for me, as I don’t have much experience with astronomy and some of the terms were only vaguely familiar. If you already know a little one who expresses interest in the night sky, the planets, or outer space, this book may be a perfect addition to her personal library.
