So many novels are about the process of falling in love – boy meets girl, boy marries girl, boy and girl live happily ever after. Not many authors tackle the years after the honeymoon period, when the bloom may be off the rose and real life sets in, but that’s just what Deborah Michel does in Prosper in Love.
Lynn and Jamie Prosper have been married for 2 years and while they’re happy, their life isn’t perfect. Lynn is a junior curator at a Los Angeles art museum, well respected and with a bright future. Jamie is a lawyer who would rather have gone into architecture, but is afraid to leave the comfort of his job. Jamie is working on a project in New York City and has been traveling a lot, when an old college friend of Lynn’s walks back into her life. Lynn is unsure of F.X.’s motives – she remembers him as a womanizer and someone who fabricated lies to suit his needs. When Jamie returns early from a business trip and walks in on Lynn and F.X. in what appears to be a compromising position, everything falls apart and they both find themselves contacting lawyers.
Prosper in Love is the kind of novel that reminds you how important communication is in a relationship, not just about a couple’s thoughts and feelings but also about their pasts. Jamie doesn’t open up much to Lynn, and she perceives him as jealous. She’s not completely honest with him about F.X., afraid of how he’ll react, and of course such lies always come out.
The story is told solely from Lynn’s point of view, and I felt Jamie was not quite as developed as he could have been. We’re not sure if he really has jealousy issues, what he’s thinking or feeling with regards to his marriage to Lynn. I also would have liked an epilogue to wrap things up, as the ending was a bit abrupt. You get the sense of how things will turn out for Lynn and Jamie, but a more definitive idea would have been welcome.

One does feel, sometimes, that marriage licenses should have the same type of warning labels as other addictive substances. Or, at the very least, a 30-day return policy.
