Books on Screen: Morning Joe

January 21, 2010 by Jennifer

Mike Brzezinkski is one of the host’s of MSNBC’s Morning Joe. Before reading her memoir All Things At Once, I had never seen the show. I still liked reading the story of how she balanced motherhood and a career in TV news.

In her book she talked about her work on MSNBC over the years, and then specifically about when Joe Scarborough asked her to cohost as he auditioned for the spot that Don Imus left in the morning line-up when he got fired. It did make me curious about the show.

Here’s a true confession: I don’t “do” news. I don’t watch local news (except in the morning, mostly to get a check on the weather). I don’t watch national news, or the talking heads on 24-hour news networks. I don’t really read the news either (in spite of being a reader).

So, I’m not going to spend my first few hectic morning hours watching Joe and Mika on MSNBC. But I was curious, so I did watch a few broadcasts for the purpose of this review. Mika is the serious newscaster and Joe is the loudmouth. In addition to the two of them, they feature other guests, depending on what the topic is. It’s a lively exchange of ideas, and if I was interested in that sort of show, I think I’d probably tune in again.

After “getting to know” Mika in the pages of her memoir, I did enjoy finally seeing her in action.

If you’re a fan of the TV news biz, you’d like her book, because she does give interesting details about the industry.

You can still win a copy of Mika Brzezinski’s memoir All Things At Once. Just read my review at 5 Minutes for Mom and leave a comment as your entry (giveaway open through Sunday).

Jennifer Donovan, of Snapshot blog fame, gets her news in bite-sized bits as yahoo headlines, but she’s not afraid to tackle a hundreds-pages novel.

We’re very similar in our approach to news. I watch only when big things happen, but then I quickly get overwhelmed (and usually depressed) and have to turn it off.

Good review, Jennifer. I don’t do news, either, because hardly any of it is actually news anymore! It’s all just drama mixed with opinion. My dh and I went to high school with Joe Scarborough…you pegged him with your description lol.

    LOL to Julie.

Well, I don’t do the news either because, as Julie pointed out, it’s drama mixed with opinion.

That said, I do think it’s cool that you caught a few shows, following up on your book. It was fun to read about.
