What the Duck

January 7, 2010 by Carrie

I can’t quit snickering. Let me first say that it has been a long, long, LONG time since I’ve read comics of any sort. I haven’t seen a newspaper in years and I don’t bother to look them up online. I had my favorite strips when I was a teen but they just haven’t stuck with me over the years. My husband, on the other hand, is a comic strip fan and just this past Christmas I gifted him with the The Complete Calvin and Hobbes for Christmas. Then he pointed out What the Duck: A W.T. Duck Collection to me and I decided to sit down and breeze through it.

Oh. my. word.

I don’t know if it’s just the fact that Jonathan and I are wedding photographers or what but this comic strip is absolutely HYSTERICAL! Created by Aaron Johnson as blog fodder, W.T. Duck caught the attention of many camera aficionados and the cartoons kept coming. It’s definitely one for adults and you get extra bonus points if you like cameras and deal with people in general. What the Duck has an Office feel to it. Lots of ducks wielding cameras dealing with people who think they look like Brad Pitt or want to but end up hating a photographer’s best work because they think they have “weird eyes.” I simply could not quit laughing. Bridezillas, people who underestimate the amount of work and creative talent you put into any particular shot, relatives who think you owe them rounds of Christmas photos, people who assume that you are out to rip them off, etc., etc., etc. It’s all here. Of course there is camera humor thrown in here and there along with the common misconception that if you just have a better camera you’ll take better pictures.

I almost really shouldn’t be posting this review because I have to admit that I identified with, and laughed uproariously over, the subject matter in this strip. If you have a friend who is into photography, if you yourself are attempting to, or in actuality are pursuing photography as a career, then oh my word you’ve got to get this book. It’s also a fantastic strip for anyone with an overly developed sense of sarcastic humor (which they really have caused to be ashamed for at times) and who might be self employed. Oh yes. The self employed will also get a kick out of this cartoon.

My favorite one (that had me laughing the hardest):

And I’m laughing because it’s real, folks.

But unlike W.T. Duck, we just keep smiling and trying to think of something polite to say in return.

Off to the What the Duck website to laugh some more….

Comics are back in my life! It’s been a long time coming.

Carrie comes by her book obsession honestly, having descended from a long line of bibliophiles. She blogs about books regularly at Reading to Know and Reading My Library.

That is SOOO AWESOME!! My husband’s a photographer, and he and I just spent a few minutes chuckling over the “best of” on the website! I know what I’m getting him for the next giftgiving occasion 🙂 Thanks so much for reviewing this, as I hadn’t heard of it before.

Hilarious! I HAVE to check this book out, esp since my husband (N) has been exploring photography for a couple of years and his birthday is in a few weeks. Thanks for the great review.
