Winter’s Tail

January 8, 2010 by Lauren

PhotobucketSeveral months ago, Dawn reviewed Winter’s Tail, the true story of Winter the famous dolphin who injured her tail in a crab trap. After her rescue, Winter learned to swim again with the use of a prosthetic tail. If you haven’t read Dawn’s review, be sure to check it out.

Now, Crave Entertainment has adapted Winter’s Tail for use on the Nintendo DS. The game includes an interactive storybook based on the book and also includes a collection of mini-games. The games reinforce the book’s themes of overcoming adversity, resiliency, and hope.

My almost eight-year-old son has a DS, but he tends to favor sports games. I wasn’t sure how well he would respond to Winter’s Tail, but I can say that the game passed the test! When I asked him what he liked about it, he responded, “I like the dolphin’s story, and the games were cool. I also learned a lot!” Since most of his DS games don’t have much educational value, I appreciate that he is having fun and learning at the same time.

Winter’s Tail is rated E and is recommended for ages 6-10. As an added bonus, the game features special accessibility options for children with motor skill and other physical challenges (I find this especially wonderful given the fact that this story inspires all of us to overcome adversity). I also liked that the story was read by the authors themselves. If you are looking for a entertaining, educational, and inspiring game for the Nintendo DS, look no further than Winter’s Tail. I am sure your young gamer will enjoy it as much as mine.

Lauren is a wife, a mother of two, and an avid reader. She blogs at Baseballs and Bows. Lauren thanks Crave Entertainment for providing the review copy of this game.
