David Carter Pop-Up Books

December 3, 2009 by Lauren

PhotobucketDavid Carter’s Bugs series started with How Many Bugs in a Box?. Since that time, he has written more than 50 pop-up books. The latest Bug book is titled Snow Bugs: A Wintery Pop-up Book , and it is a wonderful addition to the series. The Snowflake Bugs, Ice-Skating Bugs, and other wintry creatures are celebrating the cold weather in a way that will make young readers smile. Each spread includes whimsical text and pop-ups for children to enjoy.

This book would make a great gift for children ages 3 and up, but I would recommend adult supervision for kids under 5. The pop-ups are sturdy, but some are intricately designed and could be messed up by curious fingers. My five-year-old daughter truly loves this book. We don’t get much snow in Middle Tennessee, but she can enjoy the cold weather and snow through the pages of Snow Bugs!

PhotobucketThe Bug series is not the only line of pop-ups created by David Carter. His acclaimed Color series, which started with One Red Dot, has a new title as well. White Noise: A Pop-up Book for Children of All Ages uses elaborate paper designs to stimulate the senses. This is not as much a story as it is a work of art and an exploration of art. This book is recommended for children ages 3 and up. As I mentioned before, young children may need supervision when handling the pop-ups, and that is especially true with the detailed paper structures in this book. Because they are fun and instructive, White Noise and the other books in this series would also be a wonderful donation to any art classroom or art program designed for kids.

Lauren is a wife, a mother of two, and an avid reader. She blogs at Baseballs and Bows. Lauren thanks Simon and Schuster for providing the review copies of these books.
