Eccentric Racing Network

November 9, 2009 by Lauren

PhotobucketUnfortunately, as boys get older, many of them lose interest in books. Right now, my second grade boy is an avid reader, and I hope he stays that way. Just thinking that he might be nearing a time when he doesn’t ask to stay up and read one more chapter makes me sad!

Eccentric Racing Network: RV the Racer Aardvark is a new book written for all kids in the 8-12 age range, but it is one that I believe will appeal especially to some of those difficult to reach boys. The story centers around RV the Racer Aardvark, a creature born without feet, who lives in outer space. RV rolls around on one wheel, and he is quite talented and fast. As the story unfolds, the reader is introduced to Major Tom, a selfish character who wants to defeat RV at all costs, and RV’s other unique friends and enemies. Through some exciting adventures, RV and the other characters learn about friendship, love, honesty, and integrity.

Many of the original sports in the story mirror extreme sports like skateboarding and surfing, and the terminology and excitement provide an excellent hook for grabbing the attention of young, reluctant readers. As an additional bonus, readers can visit the Eccentric Racing Network website, which provides supplemental material. Although I am not part of the target audience, I think kids will find both the book and website to be cool. The Dove Foundation also awarded this book with its “Family-Approved Seal” and recommends it as a good read. If you have a reader in this age range, be sure to look for Eccentric Racing Network: RV the Racer Aardvark.

Lauren is a wife, a mother of two, and an avid reader. She blogs at Baseballs and Bows. Lauren thanks L.M. Ruttkay, the author, for providing the review copy of this book.

This is the kind of book that my ears are pricked for. I’ve had no problem keeping Amanda engaged with books. I think that part of that is being able to recommend books that interest her, and part of it is that she IS a reader.

But I’m hoping hoping hoping that Kyle develops a lifelong love of reading as well, and I know that I need to make sure I’m presenting many different options for him.
