On Reading: My Kindle got Skinned!

September 25, 2011 by Jennifer

This summer, we were able to have a nice visit with dear friends in Connecticut. Our kids grew up together. My friend’s youngest son was my “third child” and Kyle was her “fifth child,” because of the time that they each spent with us as we helped each other out as necessary; and since they’ve known each other from birth, they really are like brothers.

Her two oldest daughters bookend Amanda and are among her best friends. It’s been my pleasure to watch them grow up, and I enjoyed spending time in their home on this visit and was treated more like a relative than a special guest with whom everyone had to put on their best face, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

The girls and I could often be found lined up at the breakfast bar reading our Kindles (I do wish I had a picture). Like any young teen, M. likes pretty things, and I knew she had received a “skin” to pretty up her plain white Kindle, but I hadn’t seen it until this visit. Even though I’m a pretty basic kind of person, I have to admit that it was sharp.

M's Van Gogh skin as shown on the newest Kindle not her awesome Kindle2

I tried to find Kindle Skins on amazon that would fit my Kindle2, but the pickings were slim (there is a full collection for the newest model). What I loved about M.’s was that the skin went around each individual key. She had her original packaging, so we went to the DecalGirl site and searched all 700 options for the Kindle 2.

It was waiting for me when I got home, and I put it on. My husband who is even more traditional than I am said, “You like that better than just the plain white?”

It’s taking some getting used to, but I know how sharp I thought M.’s looked each time she pulled it out, so I’m thinking that yes, yes I do. My favorite blue-green color, teen style, books — what more could a girl want?

It looked even better against the dramatic backdrop of the Grand Canyon on our vacation this summer.

What about you? Have you customized any electronics? Would you ever accessorize your ereader?

Jennifer Donovan is a traditionalist at heart, but she doesn’t mind breaking out of a rut either. She’s currently in a blogging rut, but is trying to post more often at her blog Snapshot.

I love Decal Girl. I have the same skin design (B&W Fleur) on my kindle, my netbook, and my HTC phone. I like having everything match, in the same classic design. In a house with 5 girls, 4 of whom also have kindles, it is important to know to whom each one belongs. And we always get great compliments on the streamline look of the skins when we are out and about. 🙂

That’s really cool, Toni. And YES, it did make it easier to keep up with all the Kindles floating around in my friend’s house!

Oh how pretty! I JUSt got my iPad but I think my husband is ordering a case called the Book Book which is the bomb! I shall find a link.

    Is this it, Pam?

    That’s cool!

They had a skin that had old books on it that I was drawn to as well, but it looked sort of busy.

I love DecalGirl skins! We’ve got them on Kindles, laptops, and the PS3 box and controllers. I agree that it took a little time for me to get used to it being on the Kindle, but eventually it became part of the background–it will for you too, if it hasn’t already!

Yes, I think I’m used to it now, but it was a tiny bit distracting right at first!

Okay, I need one of these! Did you get the high gloss coating or the matte/satin coating?

Mine’s the high gloss. I think that my friend’s daughter’s was too.

I bought a red leather cover for my Kindle and I love it.
I have a double case on my iphone….a hard red inner case with a black rubber outer one…it has saved my phone more than once from some mishap, so it isn’t just pretty.
I’d love to have a red skin for my laptop someday if it becomes available. I have an HP.

Ooo, pretty! I admit, my Kindle (and other electronics) are usually plain. But these skins look fun and different — might have to check them out.

It does look nice. I have wondered about dressing my Kindle, but I probably would only do so if someone offered it to me as a review.
I esp. like your skin against the Grand Canyon, very cool.

I don’t think that I would have bought it if I hadn’t seen one on. But I liked it — enough that I shelled out the $ myself!

I have a skin for my iPod (its a 5th gen iPod nano). The skin that goes over the iPod makes it look really creepy due to the blue on the iPod.
