I don’t know about you, but though I love the literary delights of a good Southern story, not to mention the timeless classic, I also really like to indulge in a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat, stay-up-at-night, roller-coaster-ride of a read. If you’re with me, then I have the book for you.
Face of Betrayal is a collaboration between Lis Wiehl and April Henry. You will recognize Wiehl from her stints on Fox News, The O’Reilly Factor in particular. In this novel, she couples her knowledge of the legal world with her media savvy to tell the story of three friends, one a prosecutor, one a news reporter, and one an investigator who together comprise the Triple Threat Club, named after their favorite chocolate dessert. The mystery surrounding the friends sounds as if it came from today’s newswire:
While home on Christmas break, a seventeen-year-old Senate page takes her dog out for a walk and never returns. Reporter Cassidy Shaw is the first to break the story. The resulting media firestorm quickly ensnares Federal Prosecutor Allison Pierce and FBI Special Agent Nicole Hedges. The three unique women are life-long friends who call themselves The Triple Threat–a nickname derived from their favorite dessert and their uncanny ability to crack cases via their three positions of power.
Though authorities think Katie might have been kidnapped or run away, those theories shatter when Nicole uncovers Katie’s blog. They reveal a girl troubled by a mysterious relationship with an older man. Possibly a U.S. Senator.
As the three women race against time to find Katie alive, their increasing emotional involvement brings out their own inner demons and external enemies. There are many faces of betrayal, but they must find one face in a crowd of growing suspects before they become the next victims.
It’s suspenseful. It’s engaging. It kept me turning the pages, no matter the hour. The mystery remained mysterious right up until the end, just as it should. Allison, Nicole and Cassidy are likeable though flawed (and I’m of the opinion that flawed protagonists are all the more likeable, but that’s just me). Seeing the case from their different perspectives was intriguing. All in all, Face of Betrayal is a pleasant read, the roller coaster kind.

I did a double take when I saw that you had reviewed this! ;D It looked more like a Dawn or Jennifer book! ha! Well, it sounds suspenseful and engaging alright!
Jennifer (5 Minutes for Books) says
Ha — I don’t think that Dawn really does the suspense thing, but I know (b/c I know all) that Lisa does 🙂

I prefer audiobooks, so I picked this one up and enjoyed it so much that I drove 3 hours out of my way just to keep listening to it. I will buy other “Triple Threat” novels.
