Scholastic Summer Challenge

Our last day of school was two days ago and already I’ve heard the common complaint of “I’m SOOOO BOOOORRRED!” accompanied by the usual allegation that “There’s NOOOOTHINGGGGG to do!”

What? Your kids too? I don’t know about you, but my usual response is

1. I’ll give you something to do, mister; looks like the baseboards need dusting/the weeds need pulling/fill in the blank with some equally undesirable chore…

OR

2. Why don’t you go read a book?

For some reason, neither option is very appealing, at least not to someone determined to be bored despite the vast array of cleaning and reading options.

Enter Scholastic’s Summer Reading Challenge. From their website:

The Scholastic Summer Challenge™ on Scholastic.com was developed to promote reading over the summer. The exciting team atmosphere and book-related games and activities motivate kids to continue reading even while out of school and encourage them to discover new options for pleasure reading.

How does it work? Kids ages 7-12, upon registering, will take a quick quiz which will assign them to a team. Kids then accumulate points for their team based on a log of minutes read as well as trivia quizzes derived from the Book of the Week and participation in the Game of the Month. Not only that, but kids can read towards contributions to various charities and participate in an online community with online fun such as:

• Take fun quizzes and multiply their points
• Unlock new games and earn even more points
• Apply their points to the Scholastic Book Fairs’ “Read for the World Record!”
• Watch awesome celebrity shout-out videos including: The Naked Brothers Band, Lil’ Mama and Keke Palmer from True Jackson, VP on Nickelodeon
• See exclusive content about favorite authors and books
• Chat about favorite books like The 39 Clues and Harry Potter
• Post book reviews on the Summer Challenge review blog
• Enter sweepstakes for the chance to win prizes
