Night Road

March 16, 2011 by Nancy

Kristin Hannah is rapidly moving up the list of authors whose books I want to devour. Her latest, Night Road, is no exception.

Jude Farraday has it all – the handsome doctor husband, beautiful, smart teenage twins, the garden that’s almost perfect enough for the Garden Tour. Lexi Baill has very little – the child of a heroin addict, she is shuffled among foster homes until an aunt turns up and takes her in. When Lexi falls for Jude’s son Zach and befriends his twin sister Mia on the first day of high school, Lexi’s life is intertwined with Jude’s from that point on. A terrible accident after a high school party rips their lives to shreds, casting a dark shadow on their bright futures and breaking the once loving family into pieces. They must learn to forgive themselves and each other in order to put their lives back together.

Night Road is a moving, harrowing, tissues-required novel. The story is told in alternating chapters from Jude’s and Lexi’s points of view, and later on, Lexi’s daughter Grace. I’ve always enjoyed when multiple points of views are presented as it lets you really get inside each character’s head. Hannah does a wonderful job of exploring every emotion and feeling. It’s also apparent she understands a family dynamic; she includes inside jokes, conversations that are realistic, love that isn’t always unconditional and the guilt that goes along with it.

While I greatly enjoyed Night Road, enough to add it to our 5 Star Reads, I do want to warn some interested readers that there are some serious themes: underage drinking and driving and the death of a child. If you don’t like to read books with these themes, you may want to skip Night Road.

We have one copy of Night Road to give away. Leave a comment below and the winner will be announced on March 30. This giveaway is closed.

  • The winners of Tugg and Teeny readers are #17 Staci A., #13 Bin, #22 Melissa N.

This book definitely sounds like a good read! I don’t tend to shy away from difficult topics as sometimes this really allows an author’s skills in character development to shine.

I’ve always wanted to read one of her books. I love books about family relationships and drama. Jodi Picoult, a favorite author of mine, writes from the different characters’ perspectives and I really enjoy that format.
