As the mom to a recently potty trained almost-three year little boy, I can say that there’s a certain type of vocabulary that’s commonly heard around the house. When Artie Bennett’s picture book The Butt Book found its way to our doorstep, I just knew that it would be a frequently requested read!
Rhyming text extols the virtues of that body part that makes for such funny names- bottom, heinie, keister, bum, derriere! For without a butt, how could we ever ride a bike or sit on a swing? This important feature on a variety of creatures is portrayed in bright watercolor and scratchboard illustrations by Mike Lester. (Oh my, the rhyming appears to have rubbed off on me!) From football players to hippos to baboons with patched rumps, bottoms are everywhere.
Why do we have butts? Perchance, a place to place our underpants?”
A hearty sense of humor and a kid who’s ready to laugh are all you need to enjoy the fun of The Butt Book. Then all you have to do is settle down in a comfy spot on your — yup, you guessed it — butts and get reading!
Dawn and her kids most definitely have hearty senses of humor, and she tries her best to show it on her blog, my thoughts exactly.

I recently received the Butt Book to review as well – and it’s getting nearer the top of my post-writing pile! We have enjoyed the humor and rhymes here too!

Don’t you just love the kid in the pictures- with his ginormous ears and goofy grin? This book is definitely a current fave of my two year old son!

That book sounds so cute and funny.
Dawn says
Yes, Petula, definitely cute and funny. I wasn’t sure how to say in the review that Bennett does a nice job with the book by not making it elicit “ewwwww” from the kids or try to be “naughty” at all by talking about oooooooohhhh, butts! Does that make sense?
Petula says
Yup, makes total sense! 🙂
