Your Roots Are Showing

February 8, 2009 by Jennifer

Lizzie Buckley’s life changes the instant she sends an email to her sister complaining about unsuccessfully trying to balance 24-hour-a-day motherhood responsibilities with the romantic attention her husband expects. She even tells her sister that life might be easier if he wasn’t around at all.

Unfortunately she ends up being forced to test out that theory.

Your Roots Are Showing is a delightful novel addressing the slow erosion of a marriage, and perhaps that of a woman as well. That sounds awfully sad and haunting, but that is not the tone of the book. Elise Chidley tells about the crumbling of a marriage and the hard choices with an honest and reflective tone (and more than one light moment that made me laugh out loud).

I don’t often like to read books that deal with the dissolution of a marriage, or the starting over period that happens next, but without giving anything away, I will say that the tone of the book and the choices made within the pages combined to make this a great read, encouraging personal reflection and evaluation in just the right amount.

Your Roots Are Showing is Elise Chidley’s first novel. and I’d definitely read her second.

We have five copies to give away (U.S. or Canadian shipping addresses). If you’d like to win one, please leave a comment. We’ll announce the winners on 2/18.

Managing Editor Jennifer Donovan also blogs at Snapshot about life with her tween daughter and preschool son.

I, too, didn’t think this sounded like a book I would be interested in — I don’t like it when marriages dissolve either — but your comments plus the ones at Amazon make it sound interesting. Sign me up! 🙂

Christina our new born daughter helped me realize how much my husband Frank loved me. You can’t believe the amount of joy when he gifted me a beautiful gold medal with the words “World’s greatest achievement” engraved on it.
