My Bangs Look Good and Other Lies I Tell Myself

April 24, 2010 by Lisa

My Bangs Look Good and Other Lies I Tell Myself: The Tired Supergirl’s Search for Truth follows on the heels of Susanna Foth Aughtmon’s first book All I Need Is Jesus and a Good Pair of Jeans (linked to my review). Both books seek to offer encouragement to “tired supergirls,” Aughtmon’s title for those of us worn out and weary of trying to do it all and be it all.

My Bangs Look Good addresses the multitude of lies we women are tempted to believe about ourselves and God, from “God is disappointed in me” to “God can’t use me” to “I will never be enough.” Aughtmon writes with the same disarming honesty and delightful humor as was evident in All I Need is Jesus. The book is at turns laugh-out-loud funny and ouch-you-hit-me-where-I-live honest. She is real. Like most of us, she not only struggles to find a pair of jeans that fit, she knows what it is to pretend her bangs look good. Her authenticity makes her a friend.

My Bangs Look Good offers much that is wise and Aughtmon is careful to include Scripture in each of the short chapters. I especially liked what she had to say about the lie that “God will ask me to do things I don’t want to do”:

This is one of the most powerful lies the Liar uses to fracture our relationship with God. He knows if he can get us to focus on all the scary things that God will make us do, we will be paralyzed. We supergirls are ready to lay down our lives for Jesus, as long as he is asking us to live the lives we choose for ourselves. We’ll follow, as long as he doesn’t ask us to leave our hometown or take a job that is beyond our abilities. We will absolutely do his will, as long as it doesn’t involve public speaking or socially awkward situations. We are perfectly willing to follow God to the ends of the earth, as long as they have a salon specializing in therapeutic massage and a year’s supply of People magazine there. You know, as long as we can stay comfortable. And with that last thought, the Liar cackles, because he has shut down the good work that God longs to do within us.

Are you ready? Because I am about to drop the truth bomb. This is the truth: God will ask you to do things you don’t want to do.

Readers, tired supergirls like myself and Susanna, will be laugh and cry both as they understand the Truth about the lies we tell ourselves.

I have learned a LOT about giving up what we would choose and having God ask us to BE things or DO things we don’t want to. (after almost 10 years of being sick and being ‘asked’ to give up work and so many things, I find I am not really that GOOD at listening to his whisperings sometimes). I’d love to learn to listen and find a few laughs in this book! My older daughters would get a lot out of this too…as they are still on the ‘treadmill of life’ everyday and on level 10 going ALL uphill, like SO many others!
