How Not to Look Old

July 11, 2008 by 5 Minutes for Books

As we age, we are all looking for ways to stay looking young and hip. I know I am. Of course, true beauty comes from within, but I see no reason to neglect my outer wrapper. The thing is, there is so much advice out there that sometimes it’s hard to know where to turn. Personally, for me, plastic surgery is not an option, but I am all about finding non-invasive ways to stay looking young and healthy for as long as possible. And that’s what the book How Not to Look Old is all about.

Charla Krupp, beauty and style expert of NBC’s Today show, shares numerous tips and tricks for how to stay looking youthful and current, and always age appropriate, as we move into our 40s and 50s and 60s. At 36, I am feeling the sands of time more than ever, and I eagerly digested every morsel of advice this book has to offer. I like the theory that looking great means keeping it natural. She cautions against looking like you’re trying too hard. This is not a book about the latest styles and trends. It’s about how to find the best look for you.For the most part, her advice is practical and attainable for all of us. Some suggestions are as simple as “put on pink lipstick” and “cut some bangs”. I particularly like her fashion advice. A few weeks ago I posted on my personal blog what I learned from the chapter on choosing the right jeans.

How Not to Look Old is easy to read, well laid out, and chock full of pictures — that’s my kind of beauty book. Each chapter tackles a different topic. There is practical information about hair, makeup, skincare, teeth, nails, clothing, and even undergarments. She divides each topic into solutions for high maintenance, medium maintenance, and low maintenance so there is something for everyone. There are product recommendations at the end of every chapter, and she includes a range of price points to keep it real for every budget.

If you’re a woman over 35 who is interested in maintaining her style and youthfulness, this book is a fabulous resource. I’m sure I will be referring to it over and over again.

I’ve been anxiously waiting for this review – I’m going to add this to my Amazon cart right now! At 50+ I need all the guidance I can get.

I’m not over 35 yet but some of my cousins in high school have commented that I’m starting to look like ‘Aunt T’ instead of ‘Cousin T’. And since they have suggestions for low maintenance, which is all I can really do with a 3-year old dogging my every step as I get ready or go clothing shopping this book seems worth checking out.

Would the clothes manufacturers PLEASE stop sewing fake pockets on pants for women. Just adds bulk to what is already bulky.

I’m not 35 yet, but I appreciate that this book helps people find their own style, not just what is stylish.

    Good review.

I am a year away from 35, but I could still use some help. This looks great!

35 is becoming further away from me than 40. I guess I’m just old (and I probably look it).

Everytime I see a write-up of this book, I grow more intrigued! Think it’s time I invested.

Janice and I are weeks away from the 35 year mark. But oddly, we have a different problem… I think I’ll go write a post about it.

I just turned the big 3-0 this year and my biggest fear is that I loose my “hipness”. I think I need this book to make sure I stay a step ahead.

I’m still 30-something but not for long. I would love advice on how to look young the natural way.
