A house sealed up for more than a century after a double murder that shook the town. Rumors abound–is the place full of treasure or horror? What kind of man was Leopold Traeger? Should the house ever be opened, or should it be razed to the ground and all its treasures and history burned? Jennie Phillips has inherited the property from her mother, and she visits small town Newton Creek, Wisconsin, to decide.
In 1890, Leopold Traeger ruled absolutely over his own home and business interests, which included basically creating the town of Newton Creek. A hard-fisted and paranoid man, he installed a bell tower at his home in case of his own murder. If the bell was rung, the townspeople were instructed to fly to his rescue. He lives with his wife and her niece, Waverly. The bell was rung one night, and now Waverly finds herself dealing with the eccentricities of Leopold’s will, and his intractable deal with death. But Waverly has managed to discover at least one of Leopold’s secrets, and it has put her in danger.
In modern times, Jennie first visits the town after the death of her mother. Her father, an abusive narcissistic man, bought the property on a whim and never did anything with it. On Jennie’s first day in town, she discovers the body of a young woman who’s been missing for 8 years. On top of that, she needs to decide whether or not to open up Traeger Hall after more than a century. There are rumors of a hidden art collection, of Monets and Degas to discover. And there’s Zane, a man with his own sorrows who nonetheless encourages Jennie to open up her heart.
The Bell Tolls at Traeger Hall carries a strong whiff of gothic suspense along with a good deal of romance, and it’s very much a slow burn on both ends. Readers will be anxiously turning pages to find out the secrets that have been sealed for over a century.
