Devious Web

March 6, 2025 by Elizabeth

As a book reviewer, I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher or author to facilitate this review. I received no other compensation, and all opinions are always 100% my own.

Tom Oliver is CEO of a data analytics company in Toronto that has just been offered millions in a buy-out. He’s leaning towards taking it, and discusses it with a major investor, his CFO, and others. Most are in agreement, except for his American father-in-law James, a right-wing powerhouse out of North Carolina, and his wife Miriam.

Tom is getting worried though. Sometimes he thinks he’s being followed. Then there was the huge SUV that leaped the curb aiming straight at him, only to veer away at the last moment. He goes to a high school friend, homicide detective Jason Liu, with his concerns. Tom continues to be targeted, and after a nasty fall from his horse, Detective Liu realizes he must do all he can to keep his friend safe.

There’s no lack of suspects. Aside from his father-in-law James, who wants control of the company, there’s his wife. Miriam stands to gain a lot monetarily from his death and she’s already moved on to a new relationship with one of Tom’s old friend’s and former employee, Patrick. When Patrick messed up a big deal, Tom fired him and the relationship soured. Then there’s Tom’s brother Nate, quick to go to the media with his gripes and complaints, seeming only to want Tom is out of the way.

Devious Web is a fast-paced novel that contains twists and turns galore. It’s not simply a mystery dealing with interpersonal relationships–it also touches on politics, religion, the world of business, and more. I was completely shocked at one reversal, and the author did a good job of keeping my attention fully engaged!
