Sally Witherspoon loves her adopted home, Berry Springs, a small town in Arkansas’ Ozark Mountains. She part-owns and runs a biker bar, Sally’s Smasher, with her friend Bill Arnold, an old college friend. Bill’s from a very connected and wealthy family, and a former biker whose friends frequent the place. At the close of a busy Saturday night, Bill’s body is found in the dumpster behind the bar. Sally is devastated, and determined to honor his friend by solving the murder. Sure she’s never been a detective before (her previous job was accounting), but she’s good at puzzles and clues.
The police are about as welcoming as you would expect, but she earns her respect by involving them in her discoveries along the way. But all too soon, there’s another body, and then another. Sally needs to figure this out because it soon becomes apparent that she is scheduled to be next. The ensuring hunt will lay bare generation-old secrets and heartbreaks.
Death in the Ozarks is a fun read. It starts a little slow, but all too soon I was telling my husband that I had to finish “just one more chapter,” and reading 4 or 5 more instead and staying up past my bedtime to do so. The plot has plenty of twists and turns and will keep you guessing till the last page, and the characters are sympathetically-drawn. Recommended.
