History is fascinating, but sometimes history books aren’t. It’s too easy to make them into dry tomes listing facts and events in a sort of timeline. Needless to say, this book isn’t like that at all! Instead it’s gorgeously and lavishly illustrated with paintings, photos, maps, illustrations, and more. It’s full of rabbit trails, from a sidebar on medieval European fashion, to the development of Chinese porcelain, from European cinema in the 60s to everyday life in the Aztec Empire.
The Ultimate Visual History of the World spans millennia and continents. It looks at how cultures evolved on islands and deltas and through the expansions of empires. From famous photos of war to the original Star Wars poster, from the Code of Hammurabi to the printing press and the Protestant Revolution, it goes from sweeping to specific. It’s the sort of book wherein you could lose yourself for hours. With something in it for everyone, it’s a source of endless interest. It would make a great Christmas present. Highly recommended.
