The Secret Mountain, an international publishing house, has recently released three new picture books that offer a deeper experience by incorporating online audio offerings or accompanying CDs. With spirit and music, these stories and songs engage young children and their families in a story time like no other.
Jiu Er’s We Were Made for Each Other features illustrated texts of a small pig named Little Sun as she goes about her days. The stories are individual snapshots of Little Sun’s life, and they showcase her cheerful and optimistic attitude, along with her friendships with Little Mouse and Miss Rabbit. Originally published in China, this nontraditional picture book is actually over 100 pages, but is in a small picture book format with beautifully rendered illustrations. This “audio picture book” can be read and listened to online, as well, with a musical trill to signal for the reader to turn the page. Please visit The Secret Mountain to get a sneak peek.
In the case of a classic folk song like She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain, it’s a guarantee that readers will be singing along. This slim, soft-covered picture book has illustrations by Sophie Casson to depict all those white horses, red pajamas, and chicken and dumplings, of course. These wildly colorful and playful illustrations can be enjoyed while listening (and singing along!) to a recording of the song by the Canadian duo Sin and Swoon. Grab this with your child for some quick musical story time fun!
With 19 traditional lullabies and nursery rhymes from Latin American countries, The Hummingbird Sings and Dances is a delightful book and CD set to introduce children to Spanish-language songs and culture. Lyrics are provided in Spanish with English translations, and each song is accompanied by illustrations by Mariana Ruiz Johnson that convey the warmth and bright colors associated with Latin America. Both lively, upbeat melodies and quiet lullabies are featured among this collection, with topics that include foods, animals, and nature. For a preview, please check out the book trailer:
