For some young children, a pet is the first creature they know as another little member of the family. In My Dog is the Best by Laurie Ann Thompson and illustrated by Paul Schmid, a tufted toddler celebrates why he loves his brown and white pup.
The little boy loves to play, and his activity level is high as he runs around, builds with blocks, blows bubbles, and reads books. However, his canine pal is on the opposite end of the energy spectrum. As the boy rolls the ball to him, puts on a puppet show, or tells him stories, the dog lies nearby, always available for a snuggle if not up for a run. The best part of it all, is that the boy genuinely loves his dog, even if he is a bit sleepy, and even in simple sketchy form, it’s adorable to see a toddler gently climbing on a dog who is willing to indulge.
Each two page spread contains only one or two sentences, making this picture book accessible as a read aloud for the youngest audiences, as well as a fun, easy book for an emergent reader. Toddlers who already have a beloved pet will likely giggle along with the cuteness of My Dog is the Best, while slightly older readers may understand the “inside jokes” between the boy’s words and the dog’s sleepy behavior.
