My 4th grader and I were so happy to be able to be invited to an early screening of Muppets Most Wanted. We both enjoyed The Muppets when we saw it when it came out a few years ago. This movie seemed like something totally different. One thing the commercials are not highlighting is the soundtrack. Similar to the earlier movie, the songs provide plot points and lots of humor. Almost right out of the gate, “We’re Doing a Sequel” sort of poked fun at the idea of sequels.
The music was really fantastic. Any time a song came on, it either advanced the plot or added humor and levity. Every song was a success in my book.
This element probably helped younger kids stay interested. I did think that the plot — of jewel heists — was one that was enough to appeal to older kids and adults and might not hold the interest of younger kids without the musical breaks.
My personal favorite scenes were the ones featuring Ty Burrell and the Eagle. Their dry wit was hilarious.
Kyle and I both really enjoyed this movie. If you enjoyed The Muppets, you’ll probably like it. I liked this one more, I think, and thought it had a different feel, so even if you weren’t a fan of the first one, you might give this one a try. Another bonus is a Monsters University short “Party Central.”
I had stepped out of the theater for a quick pit stop, and when I came back I asked him what I had missed. “Funny stuff. Really funny stuff,” he replied. I think that sums it up.
