Ten Tiny Toes, written by Todd Tarpley is enough to make even the oldest among us coo with delight. Written in rhyme, this is a perfect picture book to pick up, along with your favored baby of choice, and read. It is a book which affirms the reader’s delight in their little listener. Several times we read the refrain:
“And nothing on earth
you could even suppose
could be loved half as much
as those ten tiny toes.”
From the time those ten tiny toes enter the world until they are loving on a new set of ten tiny toes of their own, this book is an expression of love. In case that’s not clear, the book follows a little baby from the time of their birth – being rocked and sung to- to them learning how to ride a bike and hitting various other milestones. Lastly, it shows them all grown up and having children of their own.
“They’ll think of the kisses
that made them feel strong.
They’ll take all those kisses
and pass them along.”
One of the things which makes Ten Tiny Toes so fun are the illustrations by Marc Brown. Think: Arthur. It was fun to see his work in a different context. Another thing to note is that this book is great for reading to your biological child, yes, but it is also suitable for reading to adopted children or foster kids. (As an adoptive mother, that was something I noticed.) The enter message is one of love for a little child and when they are little, you definitely want to pour that love into them! My only objection to it (which is not going to be an objection to many, I do realize) is that one page spread features the children out trick-or-treating. We don’t celebrate Halloween in our household but knowing that many do without any issues whatsoever, should make this book completely enjoyable.
