Fun Animal Books for Kids

May 26, 2011 by Lauren

Books about animals are always a fun choice for kids. These three new releases from Simon and Schuster are sure to bring smiles to your children’s faces. In Owly & Wormy, Friends All Aflutter! by Andy Runton, graphic novel star Owly makes his first picture book debut. Owly and Wormy are delighted by a flock of butterflies, and they decide to choose some plants to attract butterflies of their own. At first, they end up with caterpillars, and they wonder if they will ever have fluttering friends. While most children will figure out that the caterpillars on the plants will lead to the desired butterflies, this adventure is related entirely through pictures, giving young readers the opportunity to develop the story in their own words. The illustrations are vivid and adorable, and they provide and easy to follow sequence. Owly & Wormy, Friends All Aflutter! is a fun, interactive story.

Fuddles, by Disney animator Frans Vischer, tells the story of a fat, pampered cat. Although he has everything he needs, Fuddles decides that he is ready for adventure. He prepares for his escape, and then makes a run for it when the kids head outside. Through his hilarious outdoor adventure, Fuddles realizes that his life is pretty special after all. Fuddles is an enjoyable reminder that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

The third book, Pick a Pup by Marsha Wilson Chall, is an energetic rhyming book about a little boy named Sam. While on the way to the animal shelter, Sam encounters many breeds of dogs and wonders how he will pick the right pup for himself. Any child who has chosen a pet of their own will relate to Sam’s adventure, and the bouncing rhythm of the text makes Pick a Pup especially fun as a read-aloud. As the story comes to a close, readers will smile as Sam learns a lesson: don’t worry about choosing a puppy because the puppy may choose you!
