On Reading: Super Bowl, or Super Book?

February 6, 2011 by Jennifer

Later today the Steelers and the Packers will face off in Super Bowl XLV. The Super Bowl is typically one of the most-watched TV events of the year. What about you — will you be watching?

“What in the world does this have to do with books?”, you may be thinking at this point. My husband is a huge sports fan, so we watch lots of college football and basketball, and professional baseball, football, and basketball. Hardly a week goes by when the TV isn’t tuned in to something. We like to be together, and I don’t really care about the sports, so I am usually sitting next to him with a book.

The Super Bowl will be on, but we will be watching with friends, so even a bookworm like me knows that it’s inappropriate to bring a book. So I will watch a little, and talk to my friend a lot, and nibble a lot instead, which suits me fine.

But what about you? Will you be watching? Or will you have one eye on the game (or on the commericals) and one eye on a book?

If so, who are you rooting for?

What book will you be reading?

Jennifer Donovan’s dad never invited her to another sporting event after she brought a book with her to a professional basketball playoff game when she was about 12. She shares other memories at her blog Snapshot.

I’m finishing up Sisters by Danielle Steel and on to The Marriage Game by Fern Michaels. Easy, light reading! I’ll be reading during the game, unless my husband gets excited, then I might look up and watching the commercials. Haha!

Megan–When my husband is watching “his” teams, and they aren’t doing so well, he gets excited in a way that I don’t like. I tell him that if there’s yelling, I have to leave 🙂 But otherwise it’s okay.

Glad to hear that I’m not the only one curled up with a book while DH watches a game! We’re not going to a Super Bowl party this year, so I’ll be reading a book between commercials. 😉

    Have fun at the party!

It’s just two families this year, but it will be fun to visit and watch a little. We’re probably coming home at halftime, so if my husband is caught up in the game and turns it back on, then I’ll get to read 🙂

Your situation sounds exactly like what our viewing will be like!! With friends coming over, the men will be focused on the game, the women will be chatting, we’ll all be pigging out on terrible-for-you food, and hopefully we’ll be successful in our attempts at keeping the kids upstairs. 🙂

Yes! Men watching the game, women chatting, and trying to avoid the kids — it IS exactly what our plans are.

Sounds like what we did! Although the men did a little chatting of their own. 🙂

I seriously didn’t even LOOK at the TV. Maybe 3 times. We sort of ended up chatting sitting at the table which was around the corner.

My husband’s working until the game is just about over, so I’ll be DVRing it, and then watching it (but mainly watching the commercials) when he gets home. I’m hoping to get some reading in while the game is playing in real-time!

HA, Amy — it’s the opposite — fast forwarding the program and watching the commercials.

I am lucky that my husband and I neither one watch sports. I will be reading, although I haven;t yet decided which book I want to tackle.

Actually Sandra, I figure that I read a lot more during sports seasons, because instead of doing something together, I’m reading and he’s watching, and we’re both happy.

We don’t watch a whole lot of TV other than that, so there are plenty of nights that we are both just reading together.

I like the Super Bowl because it distracts the rest of the population, leaving me free to go out and shop in peace. It’s a wonderful, wonderful thing.

And I do intend to “watch” a book today as well. =)

I hope it worked out for you Carrie. I never thought about going OUT. It’s a great idea!

I had a lovely lovely visit with my friend, and literally only looked at the TV 2 or 3 times.

Both my husband and I are sports fans (though I do prefer college football to pro). Since neither of us had a vested interest in the game yesterday, DH read a book (and watched the commercials) and I worked on a cross stitch project (though sometimes I read).

Handiwork is good while sitting beside someone and probably while watching TV too! I should start something up, because when I’m on the computer, I find that I don’t pay attention to what I’m trying to watch, but I don’t really like to give the TV 100% of my attention — I want to be doing something else too.
