Are holidays a time for you to binge — not only on food, but on books?
They are for me. On most holidays we find ourselves driving to visit family. Fortunately my husband likes to drive (or should I say that he doesn’t like me to drive?). Since I don’t get carsick — something for which I’m thankful each time we take a trip — I enjoy reading while he drives. Every trip we take insures that I will get at least halfway through a book.
Whether we are visiting family or staying home, the slowed-down pace of a holiday invites me to pick up a book and enjoy it.
For the last month, I have been absolutely immersed in Cybils Middle Grade Fiction nominees. I haven’t really missed reading “adult books,” because these nominees have supplied me with wide variety: humor, informational fiction, deep and dramatic stories, easy light reads, and more. However, I am looking forward to being able to kick back and enjoy some different types of books. I haven’t been accepting many review titles, but I have some that I’ve been sitting on for a while.
The books I hope to spend some time with include these:
- Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard
- Invasion (A C.H.A.O.S. Novel)
- Out of the Shadows by Joanne Rendell
What about you? Do you expect to get some extra reading time? If so, what books are you planning to read?
Jennifer Donovan doesn’t need an excuse to read, but she does enjoy the slower pace of holidays and summer when she gets to read a little more than normal. She blogs at Snapshot (when she’s not reading, keeping house, driving kids around, or writing elsewhere).

I read Breaking Night recently – although haven’t completed a post on it yet! It was a captivating story – better, I gather from other reviews, if you hadn’t seen the movie first which I had not. Enjoy all of your reads!

I didn’t even know that there was a movie! Oh I just googled it, and now I do remember the Lifetime “Homeless to Harvard” movie. I will definitely read the book first.

Well, for me Christmas break means I can read more! Unfortunately I do get carsick; I can only imagine how many pages I could’ve devoured if I could only handle moving in a motor vehicle. Ah well, though. I am hoping to get a lot of reading in during these holidays!

I truly am thankful each car trip that reading doesn’t bother me (Or my kids!!). So it’s a treat for all of us.

Jennifer I should be finishing The Kneebone Boy, but thought I would read a few blogs first. I have a shelf of grownup books to chose from. I need the perfect one for my flight to New York. At the top of picks are:
American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld
The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova
Life is funny by E.R. Frank
White apples by Jonathan Carrol
blindness by Jose Saramago
Time Was Soft there by Jeremy Mercer
See picking the top for adult is no easier. Any thoughts on these would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Kyle

Yes, you HAVE to finish the Kneebone Boy, unless you aren’t liking it, in which case forget everything you read.
We can chat about NY tomorrow — is that your big trip? We’ve loved leaving near here, and I’d love to hear your plans.

I want to read I am Hutterite and finish The Mission of Motherhood!
Love when I get more reading time.
