Lucy Hubbard can’t believe it when she’s invited to a meeting of the exclusive cloak and dagger club, a club made up of famous mystery authors. It’s London in the 1930s and there’s no dearth of options for club members, but invitations are hard to come by and tightly controlled by writer Horace Hazelmoor, Britain’s most popular author. It’s worth going even though it means she’ll likely meet her childhood friend and former fiancé Frank Murray, himself an up-and-coming crime writer.
It soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems. Horace is a greedy, grasping man who is interested in how to keep power over others. When he’s found dead in his suite at the Ritz, the police immediately suspect Frank. After all Frank was the last to see him, and was also poised to become Hazelmoor’s successor not just at the club but in the hearts of the public.
Although they haven’t spoken in three years, Lucy knows Frank and is sure he’s no murderer. The two crime writers join forces to search out clues, motives, and past secrets. Was Horace killed because of who he was or what he knew? There’s limited time to find out before Frank is arrested or the killer strikes again. And now Lucy and Frank are going to need to talk about what actually happened the night three years earlier, when Lucy flung her engagement ring to the floor. Will their feelings for each other get in the way of a successful hunt for a murderer?
The Cloak and Dagger Club feels a bit anachronistic but it’s still a fun read, with a lively cast of supporting characters who all add their own color and quirks. Great for beaches or long airplane rides!
