When she’s told by her parents that they’ll be moving to a new country, a little girl is given a new suitcase to pack all her most favorite things. She soon runs into problems however. How will she pack the pear tree from the front yard? What about her favorite bus driver, the one who sings songs with the children? What about her best friend?
When she walks beside the ocean, she realizes that there will be ocean wherever she goes, if she can only find it. By the end of the book, the girl is settled in her new home but cycling to the ocean as often as she can.
My Favorite Memories is a gorgeous book, bittersweet but ultimately hopeful. It’s excellent for a child who is going to move, or who has already moved, to a new home, but it’s also a lovely way to help kids understand why a newcomer might be having a rough time. Highly recommended!
