This is one. cool. book. And I don’t even like football.
This book, Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance, (for those of you women who might be as familiar with Tony Dungy as I was!) was written by a coach of a football team who won the super bowl. (Real descriptive there, don’tcha think?) I had no idea who Tony Dungy was. His name is associated with football and my brain does not tune into conversations where that word is used or that sport is referenced. I don’t go there. However, I am glad that I went there with this book.
This book is not about football. It’s about being a man of character and integrity. The world was curious about Dungy when he took his team (The Indianapolis Colts, btw) to the Super Bowl but what matters most to him is not football – it is his faith in God. He spends this book talking about why it’s important to have character, humility, why it’s important to tell the truth, love your wife, play with your kids, be honorable and respectful, to have courage and care more about others than you do yourself. He talks about trusting others and not feeling like you need to micromanage, how you need to be careful about what you say and do both in public and in private and how to write love notes to your kids. This is a sports figure worthy of some respect.
Curious yet?
He also devotes some time to talking about the heart:
“When it comes to protecting the heart and keeping it pure, a few strategies have helped me. First, be careful what you put into your mind. The things that we dwell on or fill our minds with will often come bubbling back up whether we want them to or not.”
If you, your husband, your sons, your co-workers or whoever are interested in living a life of character or, uh, are interested in football, this book is likely going to be right up your alley. I can see why Uncommon made it’s way to the top of the New York Times Bestselling Author’s list. Dungy deserves it.
