It’s that time again — time for you to share the books that you and your child have enjoyed sharing or that novel that your older child just couldn’t put down because it was “the best.”

With school being out for summer in most places (except here in Connecticut, where due to starting late and 5 snow days we still have more than a week left) — we are more in need than ever of some good recommendations.

Anyone who ever clicks over to my site Snapshot, knows that my 5th grader reads like crazy. I’m talking about unprecedented levels of reading this year (she participated in Callapidder Days’ Spring Reading Thing for the first time this year and will be posting her complete list of completed books this weekend so you can see what I mean).

My point in saying this is not to brag or to get a referral on a Readers Anonymous group (I’d be asking the wrong crowd for that anyway), but to say that even as much as Amanda enjoys reading, it’s still not a done deal. I remember well that when she was in 4th grade, her reading dropped off a lot. She was involved in a lot of activities, her homework burden increased, and so books just took a backseat. This year she changed schools, and there is a huge emphasis on independent reading (yay!), so she reads a good bit at school each day.

I try to help her with great suggestions (many of which I get from other moms or adults who read juvenile lit, so keep them coming please!). I also make sure that we have lots of books around. When I take Kyle to the library, I pick up a few books for her as well. Regular trips to the library are definitely going to be a part of our summer plans.

So–let’s have it. Share what your kids are reading. I think that it worked well last week to leave our information in the comment section (Mr. Linky will be back for Nightstand, since there are so many participants).

Yea! Last month I pleaded for more of you to participate in Kids’ Picks, and I think that are numbers were slightly up. As I said, I hope that even if you don’t participate you are reading around a bit.

This is just a chance for you to tell us what your kids are reading (or let them tell us). You could simply list the books they’ve enjoyed this month, or have them guest-write a review or ask them questions:

Why did you like the book? Was there anything you didn’t like about the book? Would you like to read another book by the author (or have you enjoyed other books by that author)?

I really love the idea of Kids’ Picks — a time for us to share what our children have enjoyed or are currently reading. Something that they selected or they were surprised to enjoy that you selected for them (which happens here more often than Amanda would like to admit!). When someone asks them what they like to read, how do they answer? If a friend was looking for something to read, what would they recommend?

Share from the perspective of your child (or have your child do a guest post if they would like to). What book blew them away this month? If they are pre-readers, what book did they ask for again and again or laugh at the hardest?

Welcome to our Kids’ Picks carnival that will take place on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.

Our What’s on Your Nightstand? carnival has been so popular (join us September 23 this month), and people are always asking for recommendations for their children, so I thought I’d sort of combine the two and give everyone a chance to share what their children have loved reading that month — whether the child is two or twelve or seventeen.

Your child can guest post for you, or you can write it up yourself. You can focus on one child, or write about all of your children’s picks. Highlight one memorable book or three. It’s up to you.

The goal is to just talk children’s books, and specifically what they like (not necessarily what we like or what we want them to like).

So, join in — either by writing your own post and linking it up here (please remember to link to your direct post not to the front page of your blog), or reading others’ recommendations, or both.

It might be helpful if you include the ages of the children whose selections you are highlighting for future perusal of the recommendations.
