Kids’ Picks – January 8 (The last one, with something new to come!)

January 8, 2013 by Nancy

My kids went back to school today after a long winter break, and we enjoyed the less structured reading time. Both kids of course got books for Christmas, plus we have a nice pile of Christmas and snow books that only come out at this time of year.

In addition to getting back to the Magic Tree House book we’d been reading, the 6 year old and I read the first two LEGO Ninjago graphic novels that I found out about thanks to Jennifer. I don’t usually like reading graphic novels aloud (or at all, really) but these were easy to read, and it won’t be long before he can read them himself. He also received, but we haven’t started yet, Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King, which is the first book in the series that Rise of the Guardians is based on.

The boys had their well visits a couple of weeks ago, and when the Nurse Practitioner we see asked the 9 year old what he’s reading, she raised her eyebrows at his answer – The Lord of the Rings and Horten’s Miraculous Mechanisms. Now, in the interest of full disclosure, he was on the first chapter of Lord of the Rings in school and hasn’t touched it over break, even though I put it on his Kindle Fire, and I had to return Horten’s to the library, and when I borrowed it again a couple of weeks later, he seemed to have lost interest. But now that he’ll need to read for school again I’m hoping he’ll pick it back up.

As for what he’s actually been reading lately, two non-fiction books he got for Christmas have captured his interest – Sports Illustrated Kids 1st and 10: Top 10 Lists of Everything in Football and The Dangerous Book for Boys.

And now for something new:

As much as we’ve enjoyed sharing our Kids’ Picks and reading about yours, due to lack of interest, we are going to put it out to pasture. However, we want to do something new that will allow our reading community here to interact, answering that age old question about what people should read next. You know how when people find out you are a reader or that your kids like to read, they always want a recommendation. So starting next month on February 12, we’ll launch a new feature. We’re not exactly sure what it will be called, perhaps something as simple as “Reading Recommendations” or “What to Read Next?” (we’d love your input as well). We’re hoping this will be a place people can come to ask questions like “Is my child old enough to read The Hunger Games? or “What do you recommend beyond Magic Tree House for beginning readers? or “I finally picked up a book over Christmas, and I want to read more. I loved Gone Girl — what should I try next?”

–Looking forward to starting something new next month, from Jennifer, Nancy and the whole 5 Minutes for Books team

Our Picks for Kids’ Book Gifts

December 11, 2012 by 5 Minutes for Books

Books make great gifts! They are totally accessible, easy to get at the last minute, whether online or in stores, and they are gifts we feel good about giving. I’m convinced that there is a book for every child on your list. If they “hate” reading, audiobooks make great gifts (check out mine and Nancy’s children’s audiobook giveaway post). We’ve also recommended specific books below that might entice them, as well as picks for those booklovers on your list.

Check out our picks below, and if you’ve discovered a new series, or have a go-to book gift for young readers (we’re focusing on preschool to 5th grade in this post), please leave a comment and share it!

NANCY

My 4th grader is somewhat of a reluctant reader, but when he finds a book or series he loves, he won’t put it down. So when the new Wimpy Kid book, The Third Wheel came in, I wasn’t surprised to find him immediately engrossed. He finished it the same day we got it, reading through dinner (a habit not normally encouraged in our house, as it’s family time) and instead of watching Monday Night Football. In the 7th book in the series, Greg has to find a date for the Valentine’s Day dance. I haven’t read the books after the first one but they’re extremely popular in his 4th grade class and highly recommended.

Parents of preschoolers may be familiar with Ladybug Girl, and while my kindergartner likes the books featuring Lulu, it’s the ones with her friend Sam that are a big hit with both of my boys. The Amazing Adventures of Bumblebee Boy follows Sam as he wants to play alone, while his little brother Owen tries his hardest to play too (the boys’ favorite part is when Owen asks to be “soup hero” too). Older and younger siblings will identify with each of the characters and it also reinforces using your imagination.

Finally, I can’t recommend books in a gift guide without including Mo Willems, and while he has new Pigeon and Elephant & Piggie books out this year (see Dawn’s section below), it’s Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs that I want to highlight. This hilarious twist on the classic story will have kids and adults rolling with laughter.

JENNIFER

I can’t stop recommending Horten’s Miraculous Mechanisms and Horten’s Incredible Illusions, both linked to my reviews. This set of books would be great for any strong reader ready for more complex chapter books, no matter the age. Readers who have enjoyed Mysterious Benedict Society will enjoy this lesser-known new series, though I think Horten also works well for younger readers who like imaginative and adventurous stories who aren’t ready for the length or complexity of those stories.

That said, an special gift edition of The Mysterious Benedict Society Complete Collection would be greatly appreciated by the hardcore bookworm on your list, especially if he or she hasn’t yet discovered this series, or has just started it.

The One and Only Ivan is a good pick for animal lovers and more bookish types looking for a sweet, quieter story.

DAWN

I have to reinforce what Nancy first mentioned, because it’s become a tradition in our family that at least one Mo Willems book can be found wrapped under our tree each year. Willems’ latest Elephant & Piggie offering Let’s Go for a Drive delivers all the enthusiasm and hilarity young readers (and their parents and teachers!) have come to expect. Gerald’s propensity for extreme emotion is on display here, and as usual, Piggie is always ready to support her friend and his grand ideas. These fun books are big hits when read to the preschool set, and early independent readers love reading them on their own, too.

Two other picture books that I’ve reviewed this fall are on my list of gift recommendations. The Reader is simply delightful and there’s no better time to enjoy this tale of a boy sharing a treasured book with his canine companion after a walk in the snow than this winter. For some giggles and truly beautiful collage illustrations, be sure to check out Nighttime Ninja, as well.

And though it’s a year old already, I can’t help but put in a big recommendation for the middle grade novel Breadcrumbs, which my son and I absolutely adored last winter. A highly imaginative book that brings elements of fairy tales into a contemporary story, it also successfully created a story that appeals to both boys and girls, instead of falling into a stereotypical gender-specific niche. Take a look back at my review for more details and to find out why I called it a “Five Star Read.”

ELIZABETH:

Although it’s more of a Halloween book, my kids and I adored the Madeline parody Frankenstein. It’s really well done, perfectly riffing off the original. Since we were all big Madeline fans when the kids were younger, we all still liked it even though my twins are now 15. Every detail is pitch perfect, from the illustrations to the rhythm and rhyme of the story itself, to the “CaldeNOT” award on the cover.

A middle-grade reader that Ilsa and I both enjoyed was Iron-Hearted Violet. We both loved this story of an ugly princess and a timid dragon, which really is about the power of words to harm and heal, and how what we believe really does matter. It’s the sort of book that will spark great discussions, while at the same time just being a really good story. Highly recommended.

I also recommend Mira’s Diary: Lost in Paris. It is a whirlwind adventure of time travel, art, mystery and history, filled with pencil sketches of famous people, art, and places. But more than that, it’s the story of the Dreyfus affair. However, it’s very age-appropriate and not a heavy book, and I loved that an important historical event could be introduced to middle readers in such an engaging story.

Check out other books we’ve reviewed for more gift ideas

  • Mother-Daughter Bookclub series for tweens and young teens
  • Charlie Joe Jackson, for more reluctant readers or anyone who loves humor
  • Puff the Magic Dragon, now in board book form for babies and toddlers
  • We’ve used the Gift Ideas tag frequently this month, so feel free to browse it.

Kids’ Picks — Nov. 13

November 13, 2012 by Nancy

For some families, vacations mean lots of opportunities for reading. My family just returned from a 10 day trip which included 6 different flights (3 legs, 2 flights per leg). The kids are old enough that they don’t need my attention the whole time so I get some great reading time in. Unfortunately they’d rather play on the various electronic devices than read, and with late nights there wasn’t much bedtime reading either. My 9 year old also took advantage of not having to log his reading time and devoured his Poptropica official guide instead of the novels I had brought along for him. Well, as they say, as long as he’s reading, right? Also, the fact that Poptropica was created by Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney makes it a little more acceptable.

While participation in the Kids’ Picks event has been low lately, we’ve decided to keep it going because both Jennifer and I (Nancy) love this event, both sharing what our kids are reading and getting ideas from others. Instead of using Mr. Linky, we’re going to leave comments linking to our Kids’ Picks posts, and are asking you to share as well, whether you give a quick list on your blog or in the comments.

Kids’ Picks – October 9

October 9, 2012 by Nancy

October is a great time to cuddle up with a book and a blanket, and books about Halloween and fall are perfect fare for reading with the kiddos. I once read that you should store your holiday-themed books with the decorations and it works well for us. I also love scouring the library shelves, those librarians are experts at picking out the perfect books for display.

Do you have favorite books for this time of year? We’d love to know what they are, as well as what your kids are reading. Leave a comment or link up below and fill us in. Please link directly to your blog post, and include your children’s ages for ease in visiting.

(We seem to having some problems with the Linky, so if you don’t see it, leave your link in the comments, and we’ll make sure it’s added when the linky is up and running)

Kids’ Picks – Sept. 11

September 11, 2012 by Nancy

Kids all over the country are back in school, bringing back homework, parent meetings and after-school activities. My kids fall into bed exhausted at night but we still make sure there’s time for reading.

My 4th grader is required to read 20 minutes per night and some nights that’s easier than others. I’m hoping this year he’ll get out of his comfort zone and tackle some longer books. Mr. Kindergartener is still favoring Magic Tree House, the picture books I get him from the library and occasionally plucks one off his own shelf to read. Click over to my (Nancy’s) blog below to see what they’ve been enjoying.

I know life is busy right now, but we’d love to know what your kids have been reading. Do they have required school reading that pushes pleasure reading to the side? Leave a comment or link up below and fill us in. Please link directly to your blog post, and include your children’s ages for ease in visiting.

Kids’ Picks – August 13

August 14, 2012 by Nancy

Summer is winding down, my kids go back to school in 2 weeks (I’m torn between cheering and booing) and I know others have already started the new school year.

Having completed and turned in his summer reading log, I was afraid my 9 year old would slow down on his reading, but thanks to some great books from the library, including his prize for completing the reading log, that hasn’t happened. The 5 year old is firmly in a Magic Treehouse (“Jack and Annie” as they’re called in my house) phase and has been eschewing all others for the next book, though we also need to get back to having him read some easy readers. Click on over to my (Nancy’s) blog, linked below, to read more about what they’ve been devouring.

Do the kiddos in your life read more or less during the summer? Have they completed library or other summer reading programs? Leave a comment or link up below and fill us in. We love to know what other kids are reading, what better way to find new material? Please link directly to your blog post, and include your children’s ages for ease in visiting.

Kids’ Picks, July 10

July 10, 2012 by Nancy

My kids’ summer is about halfway over, and the second half of our library’s summer reading program started yesterday. My rising fourth-grader has already completed his reading list and is now working on the bonus minutes, which will result in donations to a local raptor program.

During the school year most of their reading material comes either from their school library, or my diligent research into books appropriate for their reading levels, new releases or just browsing the stacks. This summer we’ve made semi-monthly trips to the library for the boys to pick out their own books and I’ve been teaching the older one how to locate books in the fiction section, as well as how to request books that are not available using the computer. We also can’t resist stopping at the table in the foyer to place a few pieces in the puzzles that are always available.

For more specifics on the books the boys have picked out, I linked to my own Kids’ Picks post below. We love to hear what other kids are reading so please link up your own post, or leave a comment. Please link directly to your blog post, and include your children’s ages for ease in visiting.

Kids’ Picks – June 12

June 12, 2012 by Nancy

Summer is in full swing here and my kids have embraced the library’s summer reading program, as usual. My 8 year old has already filled his first sheet for a prize and is well into his second. He has an additional carrot as his teacher challenged the rising fourth-graders to read 600 minutes by August 10, with a pizza party for those who succeed. The 5 year old isn’t too far behind, though later bedtimes have cut into his reading time a bit more than his brother’s.

How much summer reading is accomplished in your house? Do later bedtimes due to later sunsets and no morning commitments mean more or less reading? I linked up to my post on the subject below and invite you to share your kids’ summer reading adventures.

Kids’ Picks, May 8

May 8, 2012 by Nancy

The school year is winding down here, but we’re also at the end of soccer season, which overlaps with the beginning of baseball season. 2 kids + 2 concurrent sports = exhausted kids, but we still manage to get in some reading time before bed. My 8 year old still has to log 100 minutes a week, and the 5 year old dissolves into tears if he doesn’t get at least one book at bedtime.

I love sharing what my kids have been reading over at my own blog, but more than that I’m always looking for new things for them, especially the third grader. In fact I look forward to Kids’ Picks so much that Jennifer asked me to take over getting the post up. So please join us and share what your kids have been devouring, either with their own eyes or through their ears as they listen to their favorite read-alouds.

Kids’ Picks — March 13

March 13, 2012 by Jennifer

Unlike last month I remembered our not-so-new date of the 2nd Tuesday of the month, so that you have time to write up a post if you use this as a reminder, or you can link up the post that you dutifully posted on your blog, instead of letting it linger unlinked.

We appreciate those of you who faithfully participate, tell your own blog readers about our monthly linkups, and visit around to get ideas from other readers.

Kids’ Picks is an opportunity for you to share books that have enchanted your own kids. Link up the books that they love. You might not fully endorse them, or you might love them yourself. But we parents covet recommendations of books that are truly kid-approved.

We must never give up as parents! It’s never too late to open a child’s eyes to the love of reading!

I’m not sure where that impassioned plea came from, but if you feel the same, link up your blog post (or tell us in the comments if you are blogless) what books your child loved this month. Please link directly to your blog post, and include your children’s ages for ease in visiting.

Kids’ Picks February 14

February 14, 2012 by Jennifer

Well, it’s Valentine’s Day, and I’m not showing the love. I still have our old Kids’ Picks schedule in my mind, so since we moved it to the 2nd Tuesday, I sometimes forget.

This is your chance to share what your kids are reading. It’s also a great time to get feedback from others. Oftentimes, someone will suggest a book similar to something that I’ve posted that my kids like. I love that!

See, it’s all about the love, even if it’s a forgetful love.

Thanks to Nancy for reminding me! I hope that if you prepared a post, you’ll link up, and if not, perhaps you’ll link up tomorrow (I think that’s what I’ll be doing!). I love sharing what my kids are reading, and my son has been devouring a new series. I also like seeing what your kids are reading, so if you had forgotten, please consider writing up a post tomorrow.

Kids’ Picks, January 10

January 10, 2012 by Jennifer

My 7-year-old is detoxing from his computer/Wii binging that I allowed during our Christmas break from school. Yes, he read (mostly Calvin and Hobbes), but I’ve weaned him off unlimited electronics time, and I’m back to encouraging “real” books for him that meet his school reading requirement, and I’m gently nudging my 13-year-old to choose reading over all those other things vying for her attention.

I love sharing what they are reading in my Kids’ Picks posts over at my personal blog Snapshot, and I’ll hope that you’ll join us in 2012 as well. On the second Tuesday of each month, we share what our kids are enjoying. These are books that they’d recommend. Books they couldn’t put down. It’s not necessary something on your homeschool curriculum or something that they had to read in school (although it’s very cool when then “have to” books intersect with the “want to” books).

By the way, that’s sort of what the Cybils go for — literary merit and kid appeal — so if you haven’t checked out the finalists, it’s a good place to start if you are looking for recommendations for your kids.

Kids’ Picks, December 13

December 13, 2011 by Jennifer

It’s that time again. Perhaps the suggestions of books that your kids have enjoyed reading will fall on the right ears — people looking for holiday gifts for their own children or nieces and nephews or grandkids. I know that books are definitely going under my tree!

I linked up my own post below, and I definitely have some surprises in this month’s post. Amanda is reading something that was a big stretch for her, and Kyle — well, I actually had to ground him from his favorite books.

What about you? What book has your child loved this month? What book would they tell their friends about — if talking about lovely books is still cool, which unfortunately now that Amanda is in 8th grade, it’s not something she talks about with her friends. She has a few bookish ones, and I love them for that.

Kids’ Picks – November 8

November 8, 2011 by Jennifer

While I’ve been enjoying my work as a Round I panelist in the Cybils Middle Grade Fiction category, my kids haven’t been reading along with me as much as I had hoped. Most of the titles are too old for 2nd grader Kyle, and my 8th grader Amanda, while interested in some of the titles at the upper end of the 8 – 12 age range of the category, doesn’t have too much free time for reading.

However, they have been reading, and I’m glad to share over at my blog, and I always love reading what your kids are reading.

Please link up or share in the comments. Recommendations from kids are the best.

Kids’ Picks — October 11

October 11, 2011 by Jennifer

It’s time to share what books your kids are picking. I think that we can all attest to some of the gems we’ve found in this monthly feature, so please share freely about books that your kids have read and enjoyed this month.

Write a blog post and link it up. If you don’t have a blog, join in within the comment section below. Then take some time and visit around.

We’re here the 2nd Tuesday of each month (barring administrative error which isn’t unheard of, ahem). You can also join in What’s on Your Nightstand the 4th Tuesday of each month.

Kids’ Picks, September 13

September 13, 2011 by Jennifer

With school back in session, my middle-school daughter’s reading has slacked off a bit, but my son has been inspired by his 2nd grade teachers, and a more regular schedule (i.e. not so much time vegging at home with the TV and computer), his brain has kicked into gear.

I can’t wait to share what they’ve enjoyed, and I’d really like to hear — as always — what your own children are recommending. Please write up a post on your own blog and link up. For non-bloggers, please participate by visiting around and leaving a comment below.

Kids’ Picks, August 9

August 9, 2011 by Jennifer

I am so happy to report that my kids’ reading has been pretty consistent this summer. For Kyle (age 7), he finally reached the point where he actually wanted to read. When we were at the library last week, he was so happy to find nine Geronimo Stilton books, 6 of which he hadn’t read, when in other visits he was bummed because there were none. His assessment of why there were so many books on the shelf?

Some kids just don’t know the magnificence of reading.

Dramatic much?

Yes, the colorfully typed and cheesy adventurous mouse has definitely been his go-to series for the summer. I told him that with the summer reading program winding down at our library, people probably just aren’t visiting as much. But whatever the reason, he stocked up, and knowing that means he’s more likely to pick up a book (instead of reveling in screen time, which his actions would reveal is even more “magnificent” than reading) makes me very very happy.

What about you? Have your kids discovered a new series or author this summer that has them happily sticking their nose in a book? Maybe they’ve experimented with audiobooks or ereaders. We want to hear about it! We invite bloggers to link up your posts on the 2nd Tuesday of each month and tell us what your kids have been reading. Non-bloggers can let us know what your kids recommend in the comment section, and we invite everyone to visit around. These posts are always full of great ideas!

Kids’ Picks (Better late than never)

July 19, 2011 by Jennifer

It’s summer. Summer — as in a chance to sleep in late(ish) every once in a while, the opportunity to have days here and there with no schedule or appointments. Unfortunately summer seeped into my brain, and I completely forgot about Kids’ Picks! I remembered on Thursday afternoon, and we decided that we’d just post it a week late. I’m so sorry if you were more on the ball than I was, or if you were waiting and wondering.

So — here it is! If you published something on your site last week, go ahead and link it up. If you were just wondering what was going on, it’s not too late to write one up now. We really want to know what your kids have enjoyed during their summer reading.

If you don’t have a blog, feel free to leave a comment telling us what your children have enjoyed.

Next week is our What’s on Your Nightstand carnival (the 4th Tuesday of each month), and I promise that Kids’ Picks will be back on August 9th, and the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Kids’ Picks or Cybils Reviews – June

June 14, 2011 by Jennifer

I don’t know about you, but I am thrilled with the return of Kids’ Picks! You can also continue to link any Cybils reviews that are also supposed to be books high on literary merit and kid-appeal.

We are already a couple of weeks into summer here in Houston (summer vacation that is — summer itself is practically year round). I’ve done well at promoting summer reading, and have shared Amanda’s and Kyle’s picks over at my blog (see below). I’d love for you to leave some comments over there for Kyle, who is a high-level yet low to medium-high interest reader (depending on the hour).

This is a great time for you to share some books your kids love to help us all out. Perhaps you’d like to craft it more like a “Nightstand” post and have your kids share some books they’d like to read this summer. That always works too.

To make it easier to surf around, please include your children’s ages when you link up.

Non-bloggers we want to hear from you too! Tell us in the comments what books your kids are picking.
