The Adventures of Ook and Gluk

October 20, 2010 by Nancy

The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future is the second graphic novel by George Beard and Harold Hutchins, the main characters in the Captain Underpants novels by Dav Pilkey. If you’re not familiar with the series, George and Harold draw cartoons that come to life, which is how the Captain was born. In Ook and Gluk, George and Harold are the authors and illustrators of a story about two boys named Ook Schadowski and Gluk Jones, who suspiciously resemble George and Harold themselves. Ook and Gluk outsmart Chief Goppernopper, the evil village chief, travel to the future and learn kung-fu, then use mechanical dinosaurs to destroy the offices of Mr. Goppernopper, the evil developer who is stealing trees, oil and water from caveman days because all of earth’s natural resources have been used up, of course by his corporation. Get all that?

My 7 year old, Alex, loves the Captain Underpants books. He’s read Ook and Gluk at home, and he has also read it at school. He read it so many times in fact I had to tell him to pick another book already! He loves the cheesy flip-o-ramas in every chapter, it’s right at his reading level, and best of all, it’s funny. Here’s an excerpt that shows the type of humor prevalent in the book.

In the interest of an honest review, there are a few things I need to point out. Because George and Harold are about 9 years old, misspellings and poor grammar abound. I’m torn about this – Alex has enough trouble with spelling as it is, but it’s also an opportunity to point out where words are spelled wrong. The book also has quite a few areas of name calling, and I’m sad to say Alex has gotten in trouble recently for using some of these words at school. Of course this means I need to do a better job of reminding him that they’re used for humor in the books but should not be repeated, especially at school.

I would recommend The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, like the other Captain Underpants, for boys that are in the target age range of 9-12. But if you have a younger child who needs something fun to read then this would be good for them too.

Scholastic is giving away FIVE copies of The Adventures of Ook and Gluk (US and Canada only)! Leave a comment below and the winners will be announced on our usual Wednesday spot on November 3. This giveaway is closed.

We have two other giveaways open: The Financial Lives of the Poets novel (which I really enjoyed — risk it and enter!) and a fun Beauty and the Beast toy tie in.

And we’re happy to announce the following winners:

  • Matthew West Story of Your Life CD package to #19 Jessica T.
  • Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook, Gross-out Jr. Edition to #28 Jeane.

Nancy remembers reading Richie Rich and Casper the Friendly Ghost comic books when she was a kid. She writes about her 2 boys and life in Colorado at Life With My Boys.
